Family Planning, Democrat Style

On a recent edition of ABC’s Sunday morning political talk show This Week, host George Stephanopoulos asked Democrat House speaker Nancy Pelosi about family planning services in the Obama stimulus bill. The exchange went like this:

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those – one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

Pelosi is the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once said, “Nothing in my life will ever, ever compare to being a mom.” Now she seems to be implying that children are a burden on the American economy.

So what is going on here?

To put it in context, consider another story that emerged around the same time as the Pelosi interview. A female in California named Nadya Suleman gave birth to octuplets (8 children at once) after an in-vitro fertilization service implanted 8 embryos in her uterus. Suleman, who was said to be obsessed with having children, already had 6 children, was living with her mother, was broke and living on government assistance, and was said to be divorced from her husband, although the details are sketchy about her life with some saying she never has been married.

So what is the link in these two events – these births and the Pelosi interview? It is this:

Since the 1960s, the Democrat left has sought to undermine the American family.  They have said that marriage is not necessary; that living together is an acceptable social arrangement; that nobody wants to be married to the same person for a lifetime anyway; that females should have all the children they desire without a father in those children’s lives; that strong fathers are menacing presences in the lives of children. And on and on.

The reason is that liberals must by nature disagree with conservatives. So when conservatives say that the family is the building block of a stable society, liberals will say the opposite and fight for the opposite.

Not that the liberal elites live by those rules. Barack Obama has a wife and two wonderful children in a nuclear family, and the media fawn all over it. Pelosi prattles on about the wonders of her fruitful life. So does far-lefty Stephen Spielberg who is married and has 7 children. Actor Paul Newman frequently bragged about the longevity of his marriage of more than 50 years.

Yet those same elites incessantly produce political chatter, movies, TV shows, videos, rock music, comedy and other offerings portraying people involved in promiscuous sex, having children out of wedlock (as on the TV show Friends), treating sex as a joke, making light of the breakdown of marriage, and rejecting all the norms of proper family life.

Meanwhile gay marriage is promoted as a crucial civil right, while sex-ed programs in the Democrat-run public schools tell students to shower together, give massages and engage in whatever sexual acts they desire. And if a pregnancy results, the girl will be whisked off to an abortion clinic without her parents’ (or parent’s) knowledge.

So in other words, the bedraggled masses are given license to live in a decadent manner that the elites know darned well is self-destructive because the elites avoid it like the plague. This lifestyle is intended to weaken society and to create chaos and government dependence, and to empower liberalism of which the elites like Pelosi are the masters.

Now word comes that Suleman filed bankruptcy and abandoned her home less than 2 years ago. This was after the birth of six children.

Imagine that… the mortgage mess rears its ugly head again. Did she run out on a mortgage she couldn’t pay? Where did the mortgage come from? That would be interesting to know.

So what the heck is going on here? Where is Suleman’s husband to support all these children? And will the children ultimately become wards of the state? Already the medical costs of this birth are astounding with every newborn in intensive care.

The answer is that the children likely will, in one way or another, become wards of the state of California. And that is where Pelosi and her professed socialism comes in.

People like Pelosi have been part of a culture in which childbearing is a decision left up to one person – the female who is bearing the child. The father is marginalized or ignored as part of socialism’s attack on manhood.  Moral questions are pushed aside. So when a female wants to abort her child, it is no problem, say Pelosi Liberals. Yet this obviously is wrong because there are 40 million aborted babies to prove it, along with tens of millions of heartbroken women.

On the other extreme, say the Pelosi Liberals, it is none of our business if a female wants to have as many children as she wishes without a father to support them, because that is her right and part of the Democrats’ Whatever Culture. And she will receive payments from the government thanks to the bottomless welfare state programs that liberals have established.

But now Pelosi has let the cat out of the bag. Look at her quote from the This Week interview:

“Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children’s health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those – one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.”

So she is positing that children are a burden on the state, which is false. Children in the care of a loving family are always a blessing for society. But now that states like her own California are strapped, she says that we should stress family planning and contraception to keep the population down because the children she is talking about are a result of all the illegitimacy and single motherhood advocated for decades by the Democrat left.

Never has Pelosi perhaps urged that the bedraggled masses might adhere to some good Christian wisdom by acting responsibly, keeping the family intact and stressing self-reliance as reflected in Pelosi’s own conservative life. No, throughout decades of relative prosperity, Pelosi’s Democrat dogma has been that “anything goes” – abortion, government dependence, promiscuous sex – whatever the mother’s little heart desires.

And as conservatives have warned, “anything goes” is the ruin of our nation. Conservatives have known that the family is the best unit for the stability of the society because “the family” has the rational father at the head of it. But once the family is broken down and the irrational Pelosi-like female becomes master of her own domain, watch out. Because liberals are irrational people who are manipulating our society for their own political gain while corrupting the moral – and financial – laws of the land.

Pelosi Liberals talk out of both sides of their mouths. They want unfettered access to abortion on the one extreme, and full funding for single mothers on the other. Conservatives know the truth – that the family is “right”, that abortion is wrong, and that government funding for single mothers should be limited to those truly in need and in bad circumstances, not those millions who routinely produce children they cannot even afford to have. Because that would obviate the need for rhetoric – and thinking – like Pelosi’s.
