Parallel Foreign Policy Universe

When shoot-from-the-hip Democrat congressman John Murtha of Pennsylvania recently said that he would be willing to take terror detainees from Guantanamo Bay into his congressional district, you really had to wonder.

“Sure, I’d take ’em,” said Murtha. “They’re no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo.” There is “no reason not to put ’em in prisons in the United States and handle them the way they would handle any other prisoners.”

Only problem is, these are not car thieves. These are international terrorists. And there is no maximum security prison in Murtha’s district, and so the prisoners would end up in a minimum-security jail.

This all might be an issue if anyone took Murtha seriously, which nobody really does. Murtha is grandstanding again in a dangerous way to our national security. He’s also a nut who gets away with what he does simply because he’s a Democrat.

So you have to wonder how foreign policy and terrorism are going to be addressed now that Murtha’s party is in control. Like others in the Off the Wall Gang on the Democrat left, Murtha has jumped the gun repeatedly, particularly on Iraq.

In 2006, he said that eight US Marines at Haditha, Iraq “killed innocent civilians in cold blood” in 2005. Only problem is, Murtha did not even know the facts of the case. His charges stemmed from a false Time magazine story that was said to have been planted by a propaganda agent of the Iraq insurgency. After Time ran the article, Murtha held a news conference and said that he had been told by the highest levels of the Marine Corps that the situation did not involve a battle with insurgents in which civilians were accidentally killed, as the defendants claimed.

Those eight Marines all have been exonerated, and Murtha has failed to acknowledge that fact or to apologize. One of the Marines is suing Murtha.

The danger is that Murtha represents the unhinged liberal left in America spouting its critiques of everything from our handling of terrorists to our techniques for surveilling very dangerous people while acting as if terrorists are not such bad folks, a parallel universe where up is down and right is wrong.

And the last time these people controlled foreign policy during the 1990s, nineteen terrorists waltzed into America and obtained drivers’ licenses; moved freely about the country; took flying lessons; communicated through the internet; received overseas funding; did dry runs on commercial flights and pulled off 9/11 which required a stunning negligence on the part of law enforcement. And for those who say that it happened on Bush’s watch, the fact is that Bush was blind because during the Clinton years, domestic intel gathering on terrorism was essentially nil, even after the first attack on the World Trade Center in February 1993. Thus Bush was  handed an empty briefing book.

Now we have a Democrat president who wants to shut down Guantanamo and a congressman who seems to think that the terrorists there are no threat. And during the signing of the executive orders to shut Guantanamo, Obama twice referred to his White House counsel Greg Craig because Obama did not even know what he was signing. This is more troubling than Murtha’s rants.

Obama signed the orders contemporaneous with the news that two former detainees released by the United States have rejoined the jihad against the US. Saudi Abu Sufyan al-Azdi al-Shahri is now in the upper ranks of al Qaeda in Yemen while Abu al-Hareth Muhammad al-Oufi is described now as an al Qaeda field commander. US officials say that 12% of the 520 detainees released from Guantanamo since the camp was established – or 61 warriors – are known to have rejoined the war against the US. Guantanamo now has 245 detainees left.

As all this is happening, Hillary Clinton has been sworn in as our new secretary of State, claiming she wants to use “smart power” to influence world events. Unfortunately there was not much “smart power” used in the administration of her husband, which is why 9/11 happened. And it would not even have required “smart power” to stop 9/11, but just some old-fashioned, low-level police work and intelligence gathering, both of which were non-existent in the Clinton years while Bill was chasing Monica Lewinsky around his desk.

The biggest danger to U.S. security, Clinton emphasized, is that weapons of mass destruction will fall into the hands of terrorists. For that reason, she said she favors a “tough, reality-based approach to North Korea” as the best way to minimize or eliminate the regime’s role as a proliferator of deadly weapons and nuclear technology.

But the Clinton administration’s own approach to North Korea has led to the proliferation that we now face. In 2002, it was revealed that North Korea was developing nuclear weapons. In fact North Korea got most of its nuclear materials from the US when Bill Clinton authorized North Korea to get American nuclear reactor parts, technology and fuel, ostensibly for peaceful electrical generation, in exchange for its agreement not to develop nuclear weapons. North Korea completely disregarded that ‘agreement’.

Now Hillary even has named a special envoy for ‘climate change’, which represents further politicization of foreign policy.

Most disturbing, however, is that Clinton has conflicts of interest that never have even been conceived of previous to her nomination. When ever… ever!... in American history has a secretary of state been married to someone who has received millions of dollars from foreign governments, influential world figures and international institutions for his own pet projects as Bill Clinton has received for his Clinton Global Initiative?

Never. But in the parallel universe of John Murtha and Hillary Clinton, anything is possible.

Saudi Arabia has given CGI $10 million to $25 million, as did government agencies from Australia and the Dominican Republic. So how will Hillary deal with these nations?

Brunei, Norway, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Taiwan each have given more than $1 million as did the royals of Abu Dhabi, and the Dubai Foundation. Another contributing group was founded by a Saudi prince. Other contributors include a Ukrainian tycoon who was the son-in-law of that former Soviet republic’s totalitarian ruler; and a Canadian mining executive who took Mr. Bill to Kazakhstan to try and influence a uranium contract. Another giver is an Indian billionaire whose dealings with the Clintons have angered our war-on-terror ally Pakistan.

In addition, Bill Clinton has given many speeches worldwide to governments groups and powerful private interests, many of whom are going to be influenced by decisions that Hillary makes as secretary of state – with Bill’s hand on her shoulder for each decision.

Democrat US senator John Kerry called Hillary an “alliance builder” who could help to counter the “polarization of the last 8 years.”

But Hillary is no alliance builder. She is Eva Peron cloned onto Cleopatra. And if Bush ‘polarization’ includes offending the world media while deposing tyrants and liberating 50 million Iraqis and Afghanis, then bring it on.

Hillary, Bill and congressmaniac Murtha represent the brave new world of foreign policy where up is down, and money talks where it never did before. And there will be not an ounce of inquiry, with the media playing along with this shell game leading to certain trouble down the road for which all Americans will pay dearly as we did once before on September 11, 2001.
