WASHINGTON – Immigration reform has become the first of President Barack Obama’s major priorities dropped from the agenda of an election-year Congress facing voter disillusionment. Sounding the death knell was Obama himself.
The president noted that lawmakers may lack the “appetite” to take on immigration while many of them are up for re-election and while another big legislative issue — climate change — is already on their plate.
I was so hoping he was gonna’ go for it but I knew it probably wouldn’t happen.
It was like watching your opponent in a chess game lifting the pawn that is protecting his queen and then putting it back down and moving another piece.
You knew it wasn’t going to be that easy.
I wonder what it was that made him change his mind.
Was it the 70% approval rating rating the law has in Arizona ?
Was it the 60% approval rating the law has nationwide ?
Was it the fact that Texas , New Mexico and Ohio are considering similar legislation and that would really make his administration look a little impotent if you know what I mean…?
What has happened….?
I have been told many times that the Hispanic vote, the unbelievably critical Hispanic, the super most important voting block that there ever was must never ever be denied because it would be political suicide.
Why has Obama decided to tempt the fate of of the ancient Aztec gods ???
It’s because he knows that it is the mother of all political losers.
Democrats would get crucified running on an amnesty platform.
They can name it whatever they want. It’s amnesty.
It might be super slow amnesty but amnesty none the less.
Telling millions of American voters that Democrats intend to make all the illegal aliens in this country citizens as soon as possible would turn the spanking they are going to recieve in November into a once in a lifetime rout that would ensure Republican majorities for the next thirty years.
Ah but alas….he is dropping it.
That is sort of going to take the steam out of this weekend immigration rallies that are planned .
LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Thousands of mostly Hispanic immigrants will march in US cities Saturday to press for immigration reform and condemn Arizona’s controversial new immigration law, organizers said.
“It’s important we unite and take part in a peaceful march to demand respect for our community’s rights and dignity,” said Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo, America’s top Hispanic radio commentator.
Obama has said he doesn’t want to do something just for politics.
“I don’t want us to do something just for the sake of politics that doesn’t solve the problem,” Obama told reporters Wednesday night aboard Air Force One.
Was he talking about his executive order on abortion….?
Even though Obama has made some promises to address this he has decided to wait until the next election
Immigration reform was an issue Obama promised Latino groups that he would take up in his first year in office. But several hard realities — a tanked economy, a crowded agenda, election-year politics and lack of political will — led to so much foot-dragging in Congress that, ultimately, Obama decided to set the issue aside.
With that move, the president calculated that an immigration bill would not prove as costly to his party two years from now, when he seeks re-election, than it would today, even though some immigration reformers warned that a delay could so discourage Democratic-leaning Latino voters that they would stay home from the polls in November.
That means he ain’t gonna’ touch it.
Republicans kicked that soccer ball into his court and he just booted it right back.
If the Republicans take the House back and possibly the Senate too then any immigration reform in the future will have to be drafted by Republicans and not Democrats and that is just fine with Obama.
That way he can be all sympathetic and demagogue the evil racist white Republicans while he can claim enthusiastic support for an issue he does not own.
Democrats can say “Look …you know we would give it to you in a heart beat but Republicans just won’t let us. We love you esse”
He gets all the benefits and Republicans catch all the hell.
If they fail to pass reform then they are the ones whom hate Hispanics and if they do try to pass it then they will be excoriated by their own base.
It’s win win win.
Oh well…it could have been fun.
