Diary

An open letter to a liberal friend about Trump.

[Diarist note: I wrote this in Sept 2015.  It sat in my queue awaiting final edits and polish.  The 2016 campaign has moved on, but the premise of the diary remains true.  I’m publishing it more or less as it existed in September as an illustration of how little the behavior of progressive-leftists has changed.]

Dear Mr. Friend,

(I’m not sure we’re on a first name basis anymore; the way our discourse has eroded over the years makes me question it.  Maybe it’s better to address you formally so I don’t get accused of some micro-aggression associated with assumed familiarity.)

We used to talk in civil terms even though we’ve disagreed on much over the years.  We used to have reasoned discussion about policy and why we took our positions.  Sometimes we came to agree… most often we didn’t, but we did understand the genesis of each other’s positions and we wanted fair treatment for each other.

Let me say it — I share your concerns about Trump.  I really do.  I wish my candidate didn’t have to fight for attention, but we are where we are.

I know it’s not the season of Festivus, but I feel like an Airing of Grievances is in order.

Every time you:

  • didn’t call out [mc_name name=’Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000146′ ] for his obvious lies…
  • applauded when your representative responded to a compromise position by restating demands for a complete capitulation from my guy…
  • applauded the abandonment of proper procedure to accomplish your partisan goals…
  • thumbed your nose and did nothing as the goliath-like power of the federal government was brought to bear on us and then celebrated the crushing of our liberty in the process of making us conform to your philosophy…
  • shouted “racist”, “misogynist”, “bigot”, “idiot”, “denier” or “white privilege” to shut down debate…
  • didn’t stand up when someone else shouted “racist”, “misogynist”, “bigot”, “idiot”, “denier” at me knowing full well I am not…
  • perverted the plain meaning of words to play into your policy positions…
  • teased me about watching Fox News while you got your news from MTV and Comedy Central…
  • accepted a double-standard in expectations for behavior  or reporting…
  • spouted repeatedly discredited talking points…
  • denied the obvious because it would cause you to have to admit your guy was wrong or guilty…
  • hand-waved your guy’s scandal away while calling for prosecution and persecution of my guy…
  • screamed “gun control” because doing “something” is more important than doing something that works…
  • accused me of not caring about children (or old people, or poor people) because I refuse to relent to your demands…
  • demanded that I either produce a plan or support your plan… for which I just finished offering reasons why it cannot work…
  • ignored my experts because they represent a smaller percentage of the body of experts…
  • defamed or denigrated my religion or me for acting on it…
  • participated in one of those “outrage mobs”…
  • gloated about any of these “victories”…

Or every time you stood by and allowed someone else to do any of these things to me or people like me… you created the support for a candidate like him.

YOU did.  Congratulations.

And the sad thing is I think we’re doomed to a future of candidates like Trump, Kanye, (dare I say) George Clooney and who knows who else because there just aren’t enough on your side willing to address those items and there aren’t enough on my side willing to give debate a chance anymore.

I’d like to be friends and talk like we used to — maybe over a few beers.

But something has to change.

The next move is yours.

Sincerely,

MrAleGuy
