On Donald Trump's pick of Gov. Mike Pence

On July 15, I sent the below email to hundreds of conservative leaders around the country — Morton Blackwell

Dear Fellow Conservative,

I am delighted Donald Trump selected Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate.

Mike is a full-spectrum, Reagan conservative. He brings to the national Republican ticket his high level of credibility among conservative grassroots Americans.

Mike Pence and I go back a long time.

During his first campaign for Congress (1988), Mike came to Washington to meet with conservative leaders to seek support for his campaign. Two people who gave him help at the time were my late, close friend Paul Weyrich and I.

Though Mike was unsuccessful in his initial bid, he built a broad base of support and ran successfully for Congress in 2000. In Congress, Mike proved to be unwavering in his support of conservative principles, grassroots conservatives, and a wide variety of organizations that advance conservative causes. He rose rapidly in the House Republican leadership.

In January 2011, I joined former Congressmen David McIntosh, Dick Armey, and other conservatives in signing a letter to Congressman Pence, urging him to run for President in 2012. Instead, Mike decided to run for Governor of Indiana. He won.

As Donald Trump’s running mate, Gov. Mike Pence will articulate our shared conservative principles on the campaign trail, and he will continue to advance our principles as Vice President.
