Missouri Primary Election Report Synopsis

The Missouri Primary Election was held Tuesday, August 5th. As of 11:40PM, only a few precincts had not reported.

Congressman Kenny Hulshof defeated State Treasurer Sarah Steelman in a hotly contested Republican primary. Kenny will be facing “Wrong Way” Jay Nixon in the general. At this time, there were more Republican votes in the governor’s primary than Democrat votes. I take this as a promising sign for November, because I do not recall that happening before.

In the race to replace Congressman Hulshof in the 9th Missouri District, former tourism director and state Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer defeated Rep. Bob Onder, Rep. Danie Moore, Brock Olivo and Dan Bishir for the Republican nomination.

On the Dem side, state Rep. Judy Baker won. I think this is a good sign to keep this seat in Republican hands. Baker is a liberal from Columbia, which is not at all reflective of the 9th District. Baker has the ability to put her foot in her mouth every now and again. I don’t think this a 100% lock, but I think this seat is the Republicans to lose, especially with Hulshof running for Governor.

As for other Missouri state office seekers, either there was only one contender, or minimal opposition. Lt. Gov. Kinder easily won the nomination, while State Sen. Mike Gibbons, Mitch Hubbard, and State Sen. Brad Lager are the nominees for Attorney General, Secretary of State, and State Treasurer, respectively.
