They THREATENED to attack the tax-exempt status of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations? [UPDATED]

When I heard that line about how they had to disinvite everybody political from the anti-Ahmadinejad rally because of the IRS, I figured that it was nonsense, for pretty much the same reasons as Allahpundit. GOP/Dem disparity has never stopped anybody before and it’s a convenient face-save for a group that has to deal with a Democratic Presidential candidate in the middle of what is, frankly, an epic hissy fit. I mean, what are they going to do, really? It’s not the CoPoMJO’s fault that they’re in this mess. So, you disinvite everybody and grit your teeth.

But apparently there’s just a little bit more to it than that.

CBS 2 HD Has Learned Democrats Threatened To Attack Jewish Groups’ Tax Exempt Status Over VP Nominee Invite

Hillary Clinton won’t be speaking at Monday’s anti-Iran rally at the United Nations — and neither will Republican Sarah Palin or any other politicians for that matter.

The groups sponsoring the rally against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speaking at the UN were reportedly told, “it could jeopardize their tax exempt status” if they had Palin and not Clinton or Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden on hand.

So all politicians were disinvited, most prominently, Palin.

“It’s an absolute shame that this has happened,” Hikind said. “To threaten organizations … to threaten the Conference of Presidents that if you don’t withdraw the invitation to Gov. Palin we’re going to look into your tax exempt status … that’s McCarthyism.”

Right, Democrats sometimes read this site.

It needs to be said that there is a definite difference between using the IRS as an excuse, and having IRS used on you as a weapon. Again, for our lurkers: the second is wrong – and in this case, it’s also a blunder. This ham-fisted little exercise in applied political extortion has ticked off just a few too many people; and I look forward to watching it unfold. I know, I know, normally it wouldn’t. Then again, normally this sort of story doesn’t have quite so many people ready to speak on the record to a media that’s actually ready to let them, so let’s see where it goes, shall we?

PS: Senator Barack Obama, just in case nobody has ever told you: you are a schlemiel. Next time, let Hillary handle the problem herself. She’s better at this sort of thing than you are; for starters, she’d have picked somebody besides Wexler.
