World Vision Departs, Returns to Biblical Authority

World Vision made a very poor decision this week, then almost immediately reversed it.

On March 24, World Vision US president Richard Stearns announced that the Christian aid organization would allow people in same-sex marriages to work for them.  Quoting Stearns in Christianity Today:

“Changing the employee conduct policy to allow someone in a same-sex marriage who is a professed believer in Jesus Christ to work for us makes our policy more consistent with our practice on other divisive issues,” he said. “It also allows us to treat all of our employees the same way: abstinence outside of marriage, and fidelity within marriage.”

The outcry was immediate and effective.  Many who sponsored a child took the opportunity to remove their support.  Notable Christian speakers, authors, and evangelists decried the action.

Today, 48 hours later, Stearns announced,

“Rather than creating more unity [among Christians], we created more division, and that was not the intent,” said Stearns. “Our board acknowledged that the policy change we made was a mistake … and we believe that [World Vision supporters] helped us to see that with more clarity … and we’re asking you to forgive us for that mistake.”

And now Christians must have a response.

Here it is:  brothers and sisters at World Vision, and Mr. Stearns, you are forgiven.

If you were a sponsor of a child with World Vision, and you removed your support, please call them now and reverse your decision.

If you haven’t given to World Vision, consider their organization prayerfully.  What they do is no less than a Biblical commandment to care for widows and orphans.  James 1:27.

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Regardless of your particular religious tradition, you should be giving to help those who have, literally, nothing.

Liberals and leftists crucify their own, and when the required words and acts of contrition are given, the noose is still tightened, the chair is kicked out from below, and those who trespassed against the politically correct swing in the wind.

We are not, and should not, be like they are.

The best example that conservatives and Christians can give to the world is one of forgiveness.  Forgiving our own who stray from good doctrine yet return is also Biblical.  James 5:19-20.

My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,  remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

P.S. – for those who wish to look at other organizations, I don’t have a problem giving them a shout out.  There is plenty of need in the world and there are good Biblically-based organizations to join in the work.  Here are some others:

If you have any others you like, add them in the comments.  This, the weeks before Easter Sunday, is a good time to consider your giving, and stretch a bit.

Forgive, and give.  Amen?
