Over the last year Redstate has been one of the very few places that has seen reality, called it like it was, and done so intellectually. Many people, sites and organizations have given in to what has been called Trumpism, but in reality is nothing more than a cult of personality. However, most here at Redstate not only recognized Donald Trump for what and who he is but saw the dangers in enabling him and realized that though imperfect, Ted Cruz was the only constitutional conservative positioned to beat Trump. This fact alone is one of the few things that gives me hope.
Even though I knew it was coming I was still a bit amazed at how the media has already started telling the truth about Trump, now that he is the presumptive nominee. Yesterday they started with stories focusing on just how badly Clinton beats him. There were also stories about how surprisingly Donald Trump only recently became a Republican. More is sure to follow.
I have hope because I knew that others have seen what is happening. More importantly I have hope because I know God has not abandoned us and that He still reigns. But politically I don’t have a lot of hope for the future. God can do anything and I’m sure His plan is bigger and better that what I can see and understand. However, I may have to checkout politically for the next few years. It’s hard to pay so much attention to the disaster that is coming and feel so helpless.
Conservatism as we know it may be dead and while that is very disappointing we have hope because hope is not found purely in conservatism. For me, what drives my conservatism is my faith in Jesus. This faith is what drives me to want what’s best to help others and that’s what conservatism is about, serving others, liberty and values that value everyone and hold to what is true.
The current conservative movement saw one of it’s most articulate and loudest voices see the truth of this election and support Trump anyway. Trump has helped show the shallowness of many “conservative” websites, news organizations and columnists as well as so called conservative politicians.
Over the last few months as I have watched one conservative after another drink the kool aid and sell out the movement, I couldn’t help but think this is just how it will be in the end times. There will be people who we are sure were Christians, who were great servants, and yet when push comes to shove, will sell out Christianity and may even side with the Antichrist. But even doing those tough times, it will not be time to lose hope because God will remain in control and He has foretold us what is to come.
2 Thessalonians 2:1-3
Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us—whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter—asserting that the day of the Lord has already come. Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
