A couple of months ago I did a post about the man below and the award he received from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This guy is one of those just like Chavez who locks up all the journalists (or worse) who don’t agree with him. Correa was bestowed the “2009 Madhuri and Jagdish Sheth International Alumni Award for Exceptional Achievement.”
I was stymied by this until today when I ran into a post from the Daily Caller and circled back to the answer. I had even sent an e-mail to the group at the university giving out the award asking for an explanation. After all, the guy is pretty much a leftist South American thug just like my post discusses. Here is the e-mail I sent and incidentally I never received a response:
Dear Sir or Madam:
I am deeply disturbed and chagrined by your choice of awardees, Mr. Correa. As evidenced on my post on this subject:
I believe there is enough cited evidence that you did not do your homework correctly and thoroughly investigate this man. He is the product of a corrupt, progressive, country where even the tourists complain. This is evidenced not only by US news sources but by Quito news sources and Reuters in Quito itself.
Hopefully next time you will vet your awardees more thoroughly. This will save me a lot of time in routing out these individuals and the entities who support them, namely one, your university. This only encourages “bad behavior” and will lead to more unpleasantness in a poor and beleaguered country. I trust in the future you will be more diligent in your choices.
Today I finally figured it out. Oh, what a tangled web we weave. Turns out on the staff of the university is a prof by the name of Robert McChesney. McChesney is the co-founder of the Free Press. But don’t let the name fool you. He wants the “press” to be anything but “free.” In fact, he’d love for all of it, including the internet, to be taken over by the Feds in a Lenin/Marxist/socialist manner in de facto eliminating the 1st Amendment.
McChesney and his group are having a direct affect on the FTC as can be seen by this document.
According to the Daily Caller here are some of the points from McChesney’s book The Death and Life of American Journalism incorporated into the FTC’s “thinking”:
- The establishment of a “‘journalism’ division of AmeriCorps” to “ensure that young people who love journalism will stay in the field”
- Providing “a tax credit to news organizations for every journalist they employ”
- “Establishing citizenship news vouchers”
- “Increasing postal subsidies for newspapers and periodicals”
- A tax on news aggregators, or even a policy to make news aggregation sites, like the Drudge Report, illegal
- The allocation of roughly $35 billion in public news subsidies
- A five percent tax on consumer electronics
- A ISP cell phone tax
- A revision of the tax code to allow for more nonprofit media
Nice. McChesney’s Free Press site pulls you in, making you feel it’s a “think tank” when in reality it’s advancing Obama’s agenda. And here is Glenn Beck discussing McChesney with Seton Motley of the Media Research Center where Motley states that McChesney is “an avowed Marxist.” According to Glenn:
Okay. Here’s, in December 2008 in an op ed he said on the U.S. economic crisis, he was quoted as saying, quote: There is no real answer but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.
Motley replies “that’s our guy.”
And wouldn’t it surprise you (probably not) that several people from McChesney’s group now work for Obama. Ben Scott left Free Press for a post at the State Dept.
“Essentially we have someone from a neomarxist media outfit setting America’s global policy on information issues at the State Department,”
said Adam Theirer, president of the Progress and Freedom Foundation.
And Scott isn’t the only one from Free Press on the Obama gravy train. Also from the same Daily Caller article:
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has Free Press alumna Jen Howard on his staff. Before flacking for Genachowski, Howard was the spokesperson for Free Press. Since joining the FCC, she’s worked tirelessly to make sure her boss’s messaging lines up with that of her former employer.
And another surprise, the Board of the Free Press at one time included avowed Communist former Obama Czar Van Jones.
As I mentioned in another post of mine Free Press Implosion, Could the US be Next? I link to Steve Forbes’ post Could a Chavez-style media takeover be coming our way? Forbes states:
He has employed [McChesney] it repeatedly to argue that his version of media reform is the first step in the struggle to remake American society in a socialistic fashion. In his attack on the existing media “power structure” in the U.S., he calls for a “class struggle from below…In the end there is no real answer but to remove brick by brick the capitalist system itself, rebuilding the entire society on socialist principles.”
Yep. The Obama and his minions have again created the perfect storm. Baton down the hatches. We’re in for a bumpy ride.
