Our Pledge for a Better Future

Note: This originally appeared on Aolnews.com.

A Pledge to America” is the House Republicans’ answer to the question tens of millions of Americans are asking: Will we leave our children a stronger, healthier, more prosperous country than our parents left us?

Across this great nation, mothers and fathers wonder if their children will find the same opportunities for success that existed just a generation ago. The economically disastrous policies of the current administration have left millions of Americans unemployed and have saddled our children with a deficit and debt that is — by every definition — out of control.

Americans across the country are outraged, and so are we. Our government has failed us all.

While Democrats have actively ignored the cries of their constituents, Republican members have been listening and crafting limited government policies designed to usher in a new era of responsible government — a government that is responsive to its citizens, that encourages economic prosperity and respects individual liberty.

Below is a brief overview of our five-point plan:

First, our pledge contains a plan to create jobs, end economic uncertainty and make America more competitive. We will accomplish this by permanently stopping all job-killing tax hikes, giving small businesses a tax deduction, reining in the red tape in Washington, and repealing the job-killing small business mandates. Dramatic action is imperative now. At the current pace of growth, it will take longer to recover from this recession than it did to recover from the Great Depression. Republicans find this unacceptable, and want to get Americans back to work today.

Second, our pledge also has a plan to stop the out-of-control spending in Washington and reduce the size of government. We will cancel the unspent “stimulus” funds and roll back government spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels. In the last three years, government discretionary spending has increased by 88 percent. Washington spends $7 million every minute of every hour of every day. This must end.

Third, we must repeal the costly health care takeover of 2010, and replace it with common-sense reforms. We will enact medical liability reform, expand health savings accounts, strengthen the doctor-patient relationship, ensure access for patients with pre-existing conditions, permanently prohibit taxpayer-funding of abortion and allow individuals to purchase health insurance across state lines.

Fourth, we must reform Congress and restore the American people’s trust in government. We will allow the public — and members of Congress — three days to read all bills before voting on them on the House floor. We will adhere to the Constitution and require each bill moving through Congress to include a clause citing the specific constitutional authority upon which the bill is justified. We will also make it easier to cut spending, and allow any lawmaker — Democrat or Republican — to offer amendments to reduce spending.

Finally, we have a plan to keep our nation secure at home and abroad. We pledge to keep terrorists out of America, require tough enforcement of sanctions against Iran and work with state and local officials to enforce our immigration laws. We will never apologize for advancing the cause of freedom and democracy around the world, nor will we abandon our historic role in lifting up those who struggle to receive the blessings of liberty.

More than 60 percent of Americans believe our country is headed down the wrong path. They’re right.

This pledge is a governing agenda that we will pursue today in order to turn the country around and put it back on the right track.

We are not ready to concede the fight for the prosperity of our country. We refuse to believe that the same American dream that shone so brightly for our parents has dimmed for our children. We must reverse our current course of action and reject the economically poisonous policies of the Democratic majority. We will take back our country and restore our right to a better future.

This, we pledge to you.
