For such a time as this

I have a few mottos in life. Well mottos … or perhaps adages. Or maxims. Anyway here’s one of them:
For such a time as this.

It’s from the book of Esther, and it comes to mind when I envision my life as a series of dominos being put into place.  Some by me.  Some by others.  Some totally against my better judgment.  Some in spite of my best efforts to resist.  Some sought and planned by me.  Some joyously embraced, others strongly rejected (in vain).  It’s one of the joys of life to realize that a domino or thread of dominos that were set up long ago have created an opportunity in present day.

When I was 8 the family who lived across the street told us about a girl’s softball league that was starting up and I tried out and got a spot on a team.  A few months later my coach got into a car accident and couldn’t finish the season so my father took over coaching.  Years later as I graduated high school my father, who coached the woman’s state softball team by then traded an opportunity for me to get a job at Florida Power & Light to a guy in HR who wanted a spot as assistant coach to that state team.  The job that opened up was as a data processor which eventually evolved into my current gig as a freelance editor.  That’s a lot of dominos!  I’m detail oriented, obsessively thorough, and making things orderly and exact comes easy to me, which makes me a good editor and good at similar tasks involving data.  Plus I spend hours a day in front of several computers, and am quite the multitasker.

So when a call when out this week on Twitter from a blogger/journalist who I’ve been reading asking for some help doing some data input I was quick to jump on that.  “For such a time as this” do I have the time available and skills for data input that others may consider AWFUL.  “For such a time as this” have I happened to followed this journalist and knew that a project he was asking for help with was probably at some point in time going to advance some conservative candidates that I would otherwise not be able to help.  “For such a time as this” would I be in position to offer my time on a small project and who knows through networking on small tasks what other opportunities to help will come from it.  There is nothing more important to me right now than finding a way to be constructively involved in supporting and electing conservative candidates and undoing the damage that this administration is inflicting on our country and our personal liberties and our economy.  I’m so grateful for this opportunity.

So … what do the domino threads in your life look like?  What skills have you cultivated for use in other avenues of your life that can now help you get in the fight?  Are there any coincidences or nudges you’ve been bumping up against, a local news article promoting campaign volunteer opportunities?  A knack for fundraising, the ability to rally influential people in your community, some leadership skills for taking on a regional position in the Tea Party movement?  Or like me can you backstop some of the “in the trenches” efforts that are crucial to the nuts and bolts of campaigns, voter registration, and planning events?

“And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?”
