Anytime I watch or read the news, I always ask myself, “What if George Bush had done that?” or “What if Rush Limbaugh had said that?” Well, this morning, I was reading an AP report about Rand Paul claiming that Obama’s criticism of BP was “really un-American”. I read this story right after I read the story about the Dalai Lama claiming that he was a Marxist. I began to think and eventually I ended up with the question: What if the Gulf of Mexico oil spill had been China’s fault?
I’ll be one of the first to admit that Chinese environmental policy is not one of my strong suits. However, in recent years, the environmental activists have brought the Chinese eco problems to the forefront. The EPA even has a webpage devoted to the “China Environmental Law Initiative” where it links to various environmental news and scientific reports. It’s pretty safe to say that the environment really isn’t that big of a deal to China. With that said, it should be noted that China drills for oil in the Gulf of Mexico.
No number of regulations and safety measures can prevent a disaster such as the Deep Horizon explosion that left many dead and oil spewing into the Gulf. Regardless of whose name was on the rig, the same events would have occurred. Now, the response to the disaster is certainly a different story. British Petroleum has promised to pay for costs and damages relating to the spill, but what if BP was a state-owned Chinese company? Would China have taken the initiative that BP has?
Somehow, I can’t see the Chinese being paraded in front of Congress. In fact, I don’t think we’ll ever see today’s Democrat Party stand up to China. After all, they have to pay for Obamacare, the Stimulus, and all the other pet projects of theirs somehow. Would Obama stand “angrily” and “feisty” in front of television cameras and condemn the blame game being played if China was directly responsible? Would China bend over backwards to help with the unfortunate events, or would they tell us to cram it since they practically own the United States anyway?
These are all interesting questions to ponder as we watch the crucifixion of BP.
