Rep. Jeff Duncan Calls on SC State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex to Change Policies Regarding President Obama’s Message to America's Students

Duncan says message represents a dangerous encroachment of the Administration into the classroom

Clinton, S.C. – September 3, 2009 – Laurens County legislator and Third Congressional District candidate Rep. Jeff Duncan asked State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex today to either put certain procedures in place for President Obama’s speech to South Carolina students or not screen the message at all.
“No matter how positive the Administration’s intentions may have been, this Presidential address and especially the corresponding curriculum represent a dangerous encroachment of Presidential influence on the sovereignty of state-based education.  If President Obama conveys any message to our children it should be an apology for mortgaging away their future through reckless spending and a national debt that is projected to double over the next 10 years” Duncan said.

The Presidential address is scheduled for September 8, 2009 and is designed for students K-6 according to documents produced by the US Department of Education.  Rep. Duncan is requesting that Superintendent Rex remind teachers and principals that screening the Presidential address is not mandatory and inform parents that they can choose to have their child not watch the message.  “As a father of three sons in the public school system, I am deeply concerned by the Administration’s rhetoric in the curriculum supplemental.  Asking students ‘how they can help’ President Obama may seem harmless with the right message, but given his polarizing and political reputation, the speech could just as easily flirt with a type of indoctrination.  At very least, parents and teachers should be allowed to exercise their own discretion.”

Some of the recommendations proposed in the curriculum supplemental are:

• “What is the President asking me to do?”
• “Why is it important that we listen to the President and other elected officials?”
• Write letters about what (students) can do to help the President.
