CNSNews.comObama’s ‘Spread the Wealth’ Tax Plan a Good Idea, Says SchumerFriday, October 24, 2008By Nicholas Ballasy
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) (AP Photo)(CNSNews.com) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s comment to “Joe the Plumber” about his intended policy to “spread the wealth” is a good idea, according to Democratic leaders.
After the last presidential debate, where GOP presidential candidate John McCain challenged Obama about his “spread the wealth” remark, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told CNSNews.com: “The average middle class person needs help and wants help and when they hear that they will get a tax cut and John McCain’s focus is rather on cutting taxes for the very wealthy and letting it trickle down to the middle class, he loses.”
Campaign manager David Plouffe said that Obama is “winning” the tax debate. “Here’s what’s interesting,” he said. “John McCain has run tens of millions of dollars of negative ads on taxes. In three debates he’s made this case. John McCain is losing the tax argument. Why? Because middle voters and small business owners trust Senator Obama to cut their taxes. We’re happy to have this debate.”
While campaigning in Holland, Ohio, in early October, Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbacher asked Obama about his tax plan. Obama said: “I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”
