NY-25

Link to 25th conressional district map: NY-25

Overview:
Much of the district is rural (agricultural) in which those areas the Republicans make up the highest percentages. Syracuse and parts of Irondequoit (town north of Rochester) are where the Democrat registration is strongest. Moderate Republican James Walsh represented this district for 8 terms and was part of the appropriations committee before retiring in 2008. The new incoming rep is Dan Maffei, expected to carry a liberal voting record close to Speaker Pelosi’s. Dale Sweetland had good name recognition, but was clearly outspent by Maffei.
With the Republican registration favorable, there may be some good challengers for Dan Maffei (Sweetland, etc.)in the future to take this one back – even though Democratic nominees for president have had success in voter outcomes in this district in recent elections.

Registration (as of 4/1/2008):
Rep: 151,085 (35.4%)
Dem: 138,386 (32.4%)
Other: 136,845 (32.1%)

Cities: Syracuse

Election Results:
2008
Dan Maffei – 146,411 (55%)
Dale Sweetland – 113,358 (42%)
