A good friend of mine, a lifelong liberal, sent me a copy of the letter he sent back to Howard Dean and the DNC after receiving a donation request from them. I asked him if I could share it with you because I thought it exemplifies the racial divide and race-baiting mentality of the Obama campaign and just what we (as ex-Dems) are dealing with in this election.
Dear Mr. Dean and the DNC,
I don’t understand. Why are you asking me for money?
All I ever did was support Dick Gregory and Shirley Chisholm for president and Percy Sutton for mayor of New York City. Spend thousands of hours in the ‘60s and ‘70s telling white people about “The Death of Emmett Till,” “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” and The Murder of Fred Hampton. Get in trouble at school in 9th grade for writing an impartial paper on the Black Panther Party. Risk ridicule, ostracism, physical violence, and death – especially after May 4th, 1970 – at one civil rights demonstration after another. And in general spend decades working passionately for equality for all. And then the Democratic Party thanks me by nominating this pathetic amateur, this race-baiting moron, this complete and utter fraud named Barack Obama for president. Who spends twenty years in a church run by ahistorical, ascientific racist monsters while I’m out there supporting terrific people like Tom Bradley and Doug Wilder for higher office. Who makes excuses for loathsome terrorists like William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn while I’m still maintaining a forty-year record of peaceful social and political activism. Who funnels both personal and public money to a reverend and Illinois state senator who rails against “the Hollywood Jews” whom he claims are responsible for movies like Brokeback Mountain. Who doesn’t even seem to know that Louis Farrakhan has been implicated in the assassination of Malcolm X. And who implies over and over again that I’m a racist when I decide that I can’t in good conscience and refuse to vote for any presidential candidate as inept, as corrupt, as uninformed, and as thoroughly unqualified as him. Again, why are you asking me for money? I don’t understand.
