While Democrats seem hard pressed to find a challenger to North Carolina’s establishment moderate [mc_name name=’Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’B001135′ ] , that does not seem to be the case with conservatives within his own party.
Hard on the heels of the announcement by retired Superior Court Judge Paul Wright that he will primary Burr, Larry Holmquist, a Greensboro businessman and Tea Party activist has announced his own challenge to Burr.
Multiple challengers do present conservatives with one problem in North Carolina, as some years ago the legislature dropped the vote required to avoid a runoff from a simple majority to 40%. That provision allowed establishment moderate [mc_name name=’Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’T000476′ ] to win with less than a majority in 2014 against multiple conservative opponents and avoid a one on one runoff he likely would have lost.
