Draft effort underway for Mark Meadows for US Senate in NC

A campaign has been launched to try to draft conservative Congressman [mc_name name=’Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’M001187′ ] to run for US Senate in North Carolina in 2016.  That would likely mean a primary as incumbent [mc_name name=’Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’B001135′ ] has indicated he plans to run again.  A website and a Facebook page are both active, with a petition asking Meadows to run.

Burr has a voting record that continues to move farther and farther to the left.  Three GOP Congressional district organizations in North Carolina have voted to censure and rebuke Burr for his liberal votes in the last two years, two by unanimous votes of their district GOP executive committess, and one by overwhelming vote of its district convention.  Burr’s polling numbers are also weak.  Many expected Burr to retire after this term but he unexpectedly signalled he will run again, with the talk being that [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] urged him to do so.

Burr has been a rubber stamp for [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ], while Meadows is one of Congressmen who voted for a GOP alternative to [mc_name name=’Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’B000589′ ].  Burr is loyal to the leadership, while Meadows is loyal to principle.

Despite their differences in political philosophy, Burr and Meadows have been fairly close friends on a personal basis, and this would probably be the biggest sticking point to Meadows consideration of this race.

There have been ongoing efforts by conservatives behind the scenes to encourage conservative Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest to challenge moderate GOP Governor McCrory in the primary next year, but Forest seems to see himself as part of a team with McCrory and not interested in such a challenge.  Some have suggested Forest running for US Senate in the primary if Meadows does not.

The Senate Conservatives Fund has announced that Burr is in their crosshairs for 2016.  Burr was one of the Shameful Seven who financed the very worst of the dirty tricks against Chris McDaniel in Mississippi.
