Did a Section of Seattle Secede?

It is not very often that a city or state (or a section of either) secedes from the United States. The last time that happened, it did not go well for the entire country. However, a slice of Seattle has apparently pulled off the unthinkable, and formed its own sovereign state: Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone—aka CHAZ.

Although its name doesn’t roll off the tongue very smoothly, this new “nation” certainly has an extraordinary charter, or more accurately, a long list of demands. Shockingly, CHAZ’s pseudo-Declaration of Independence does not comport with the one written by Thomas Jefferson a few centuries ago. In particular, CHAZ’s “List of Grievances” is not exactly on par with the list penned by Jefferson accusing King George and the British Crown of denying colonists their rights.

For those unaccustomed with CHAZ’s governing philosophy (or lack thereof), here is the preamble to its charter, “In credit to the people who freed Capitol Hill, this list of demands is neither brief nor simplistic. This is no simple request to end police brutality. We demand that the City Council and the Mayor, whoever that may be, implement these policy changes for the cultural and historic advancement of the City of Seattle, and to ease the struggles of its people.”

Then comes the long list of demands, 30 in all. For the sake of brevity, here are a few snippets:

“The Seattle Police Department and attached court system are beyond reform. We do not request reform, we demand abolition.”

“In the transitionary period between now and the dismantlement of the Seattle Police Department, we demand that the use of armed force be banned entirely.”

“We demand an end to the school-to-prison pipeline and the abolition of youth jails.”

“We demand reparations for victims of police brutality, in a form to be determined.”

“We demand a retrial of all People in Color currently serving a prison sentence for violent crime, by a jury of their peers in their community.”

“We demand decriminalization of the acts of protest, and amnesty for protestors generally, but specifically those involved in what has been termed ‘The George Floyd Rebellion’ against the terrorist cell that previously occupied this area known as the Seattle Police Department.”

“We demand in replacement of the current criminal justice system the creation of restorative/transformative accountability programs as a replacement for imprisonment.”

“We demand the de-gentrification of Seattle, starting with rent control.”

“We demand free college for the people of the state of Washington …”

“We demand the hospitals and care facilities of Seattle employ black doctors and nurses specifically to help care for black patients.”

“We demand that thorough anti-bias training become a legal requirement for all jobs in the education system, as well as in the medical profession and in mass media.”

Obviously, these silly demands have no basis in reality. CHAZ is nothing more than a rogue six-block occupation by armed and dangerous anarchists. CHAZ is more a joke than a developing nation.

However, what is not funny about this situation is that six blocks of downtown Seattle have been taken over by a bunch of rebels without a cause. And this is being allowed, actually celebrated, by the mayor of Seattle, who called the degenerate thugs of CHAZ “patriots.”

It is about time that the “woke mob” that runs Seattle (and many other cities for that matter) actually wake up to the harsh reality that their city is under siege from violent, ruthless, thugs who have hi-jacked a pivotal moment in U.S. history to inflict damage and division—not healing and betterment.
