MINOR STORIES OF INTERESTING TIMES
May you live in interesting times is an ancient Chinese aphorism and, for better or worse, we seem to be living in very interesting times. Whether our times will be times to remember fondly is another matter entirely.
None of the following stories come close to matching the newsworthiness of the debacle in Illinois where Governor Rod Blagosomething had a rude awakening this morning and was carted off to the hoosegow for being what is traditional for Illinois governors, a crook: http://www.cnsnews.com/public/content/article.aspx?RsrcID=40546.
However, they all have to qualify as being interesting for various reasons.
BLACK GOV ON BLACKS
Governor-By-Scandal David Patterson of New York made a witty, racist remark at the Gridiron Dinner the other night in New York. During the gag-filled occasion, he said, “Once you go black you can’t go back”: http://www.politico.com/blogs/anneschroeder/1208/Gov_David_Paterson_at_the_Gridiron_He_said_what_.html?showall. His quip was a reference to the election of the nation’s first black president and his own ascendance to the governorship by virtue of previous Governor Spitzer’s inability to keep his zipper zipped. Okay, it was meant in jest, I suppose, but imagine the uproar had a white governor made an equivalent remark. Think Senator Trent Lott and Rush Limbaugh. Double standard, anyone?
A DAY WITHOUT A GAY
Back in the old days, Americans who like to protest would do it actively by sending a letter of complaint or by taking to the streets and marching and chanting and waving placards. Protesters still do that of course but gay protesters are adding a new wrinkle to demonstrate their objections to the passage of Proposition 8 in California. They plan to stay home from work on Wednesday: http://apnews.myway.com/article/20081209/D94URMF80.html. The aim is to show the world, and their employers, how valuable they are to the workplace and to society. I guess that’s better than assaulting old ladies, which they have done, but I’d still fire them.
MOM TAKES OVER RESTAURANT
A Japanese restaurant in New York City is punishing patrons for not joining the Clean Plate Club. If they leave food on their plates, they are hit with a 3% surcharge for the privilege: http://wcbstv.com/seenon/food.waste.charge.2.882636.html. This is hardly Earth-shaking news but it is another sign of the times, a change from the old customer is always right motto to the customer has no rights. Personally, I’d just subtract 3% from the tip and never return to the place. No word on whether they can’t have dessert.
“Reverend” Jeremiah (God Damn America) Wright, now that his boy is President-in-Waiting, was back on the pulpit of Trinity United Church shooting his mouth off and, of all people, he took a potshot at “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Liz had made some unkind, but accurate, remarks about the good rev and this was his opportunity to refute them. Instead, he resorted to calling her “a dumb broad:” http://wcbstv.com/seenon/food.waste.charge.2.882636.html. If anyone is dumb on that show it would be Joyless Joy Behar but she supported Obama so Wright attacked the only McCain/Palin fan on the panel. No surprise there, really, and it won’t be a surprise when Wright is installed as Obama’s spiritual adviser after January 20th.
BIG BRO IS WATCHING
The Russians are at it again with renewed efforts at mind and thought control. With former KGB chief Putin still running things with his puppet Medvedev out front it’s no wonder Russian bureaucrats are blaming their economic woes not on their own ineptness and the cost of invading Georgia last summer but on the U.S.A. On top of that, media commentators must be thinking a gulag is in their futures if they don’t employ approved terminology: http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2008/12/the_russian_war_on_words.html
