I’ve long admired [mc_name name=’Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’G000566′ ]. I was thrilled when it was announced that he would head the House Special Committee on Benghazi. I felt that his experience as a former Federal prosecutor would be invaluable, and equally important, that he had the cojones to stand up to, and push back, against Democrats on the committee, yet not make himself a lightning rod, as was Issa.
Many on the right have been impatient at what they perceive to be a lack of progress in the investigation. They’re wondering just what the committee is doing, and also that Gowdy may be unnecessarily deferring to [mc_name name=’Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD)’ chamber=’house’ mcid=’C000984′ ].
I’ve pretty much discounted these comments, but I was surprised…actually shocked..the other day..by a column in Nation Review by Andy McCarthy…whom I greatly respect…“Benghazi committee’s belated interest in Hillary’s emails”
McCarthy takes Gowdy to task…indeed he says it’s a scandal that Gowdy knew about Hillary’s DIY email system for six months, yet took no action. McCarthy even wonders if this means that Republicans do NOT want to get to the bottom of the Benghazi scandal.
If you haven’t already, do read McCarthy’s piece. It’s a telling analysis, and very hard to refute on point.
So then, what’s a conservative supposed to think?
I believe that McCarthy’s correct to a large extent, but he is overlooking one very important aspect of the case.
Most GOP investigations….going all the way back to Whitewater and Lewinsky..up to the Fast & Furious, and the Lois Lerner scandals, have failed because the MSM did not take an interest in them..and thus the public ( beyond the base) wasn’t paying attention.
Gowdy is, after all a politician, and a successful one, and that’s behind the genius of his actions. He has allowed the MSM..the liberal MSM, to take the lead on this investigation. They now have a vested interest in it, and it’s the type of fascinating story that the MSM loves..
Gowdy doesn’t have to be the driver on this…but I suspect he’s quietly helping behind the scenes to steer the investigation.
Just consider..when the committee was first announced, everyone wondered if he’d dare to call Hillary to testify, and if she’d appear. Now, she’s being forced by the MSM to hold an unscripted presser in a day or so…something she hasn’t done in years…
Republicans on the committee don’t have to question her now..the MSM will do so.
Look, when you’ve lost both Maureen Dowd and Saturday Night Live..well..let’s just say that “Chappaqua, we have a problem!”
And you can take it to the bank…Hillary’s upcoming presser will be a disaster for her. She won’t be able to answer the questions, and whatever she says..it will just make it worse for her, and keep the story alive.
When Gowdy does finally call her to testify, the protective curtain of sympathy Hillary likes to cloak herself in, will have already been torn down and shredded by the MSM.
One last point. Everything that happens on the Hill is political. By moving the investigation at what some have complained is a snail’s pace, Gowdy has guaranteed that it coincides with the start of the primary season and Hillary’s campaign kick-off. She no longer controls the narrative. She is now on the defensive..forced to respond.
Lastly, for those of you who still harbor doubts about Gowdy’s commitment or his passion, watch this three minute video from last January, when he challenged the press to ask the right questions. In a sense, it proves my thesis…that Gowdy realized very early on that he had to get the MSM to take a strong interest in the investigation, and the best, if not the only way to do that was to let them take the lead..
