OMG!!! Is McConnell actually going to let a senile old fool, Thad Cochran, chair the Appropriations committee?

With Republicans taking control of the Senate, and increasing the size of their caucus by 20%, the biannual game of musical committee chairs ( and membership) just got a whole lot more interesting.

Let’s take a close look at the Senate Appropriations committee.

The current GOP members are:

[mc_name name=’Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’S000320′ ] ( ranking member)

[mc_name name=’Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C000567′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’A000360′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001035′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M001153′ ]

Lindsay Graham

[mc_name name=’Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’K000360′ ]

Dan Coats

[mc_name name=’Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’B000575′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Jerry Moran (R-KS)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000934′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. John Hoeven (R-ND)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’H001061′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. Mike Johanns (R-NE)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’J000291′ ]

[mc_name name=’Sen. John Boozman (R-AR)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’B001236′ ]

Shelby will take the chair of the Banking Committee, Murkowski that of Energy, Alexander gets the awful acronymed HELP, McConnell gets  much bigger offices, Johnanns quit, and Collins gets the chair of the committee on Aging ( here’s a thought!..maybe Reid can become the ranking member on Aging if he’s not picked as minority leader)

But the senior member of the committee, and the one in line for Chair, is doddering, drooling ole [mc_name name=’Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C000567′ ].

It’s been speculated that Cochran, whose physical and mental faculties seem greatly diminished, would announce his retirement early next year, and thus allow the Mississippi GOPe to name his successor.

Whether this happens or not, there is no way that [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] can let Cochran take the Chair of Appropriations. If we’re going to start shrinking the size of the federal government, and curtail spending, and reduce the deficit, Appropriations will play a key roll. Cochran’s only “raison d’etre” as a senator has been how much can he spend, and how much of that gravy train can he direct to Mississippi.

It would be a pathetic scene, a laughingstock of governance were he the chair.

Let’s see how McConnell plays this.

It should also be noted that depending on how hard McConnell pushes the Democrats on the committee ratios,  there could be as many as THREE additional GOP seats on the committee, as well as someone to replace Johanns, and possibly one or more who will become chairs of other committee might give up their seats on Appropriations.

There is thus a lot of room for fresh new blood here..hopefully CONSERVATIVE blood.

I can’t really visualize any of the other committee members as chair. But there are several good people who could move over and take control, if McConnell is willing to shake things up a bit.

But please, PLEASE, Mitch..for the love of God and country, do NOT let Cochran take the chair.
