Max Baucus is the latest, and probably not the last Democrat senator to retire, rather than face the voters in 2014. My intent here is not to do another thread reviewing the Senate races one by one.
However, after blowing it in 2010, and far worse in 2012, nobody can dispute that the stars have once again aligned, and even more perfectly, for the 2014 election cycle.
We have an increasingly unpopular president, whose policies are both hurting and endangering the country. The old-bull Senate Democrats, all of whom are responsible for these laws, have decided to cut and run. One or two might have survived, but they’ve done the political calculus, and after having coasted to their previous victories, have decided that it’s not worth a strenuous, and very expensive campaign, and even if they managed to hold their seat, they probably be serving in the minority next time out.
Yes, the opposition is pretty much throwing in the towel before our eyes. So we’ll stipulate to all the proper and necessary caveats:
1. We can’t take anything for granted.
2. We’ll work harder than ever…volunteer, and GOTV.
3. We’ll raise lots of $$. ( Though my fellow Red Staters shouldn’t give a farthing to the RSC; instead, donate directly to whom you feel are the best candidates.
OK, now that we’ve covered all the obvious drivel…it’s time to state one more obvious truth, and to toss down the gauntlet to the GOP establishment..all the consultants, lobbyists..the entire institutional money-sucking crew inside the Beltway.
IF THE GOP FAILS TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE SENATE IN 2014, THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE PARTY TO CONTINUE TO EXIST IN ITS PRESENT FORM. WE WILL HAVE TO CUT OFF THE HEAD AND START OVER.
And now, I have to confess. 2010 and 2012 made me feel like Linus…Lucy kept on snatching away the football right in front of me. But I really think we’re gonna do it this time, and more importantly, we’re going to end up with a Republican controlled Senate that will be dominated by a solid conservative majority; one that will allow McConnell to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming Leader, but ONLY IF Mitch gets it right, and more importantly, starts getting it right, right NOW.
