Layman's Reaction to the "First" Debate on C-SPAN Tonight

I am by no means a politician and so my opinion is purely based on hearing the candidates speak.  I just found out about the debate about ten minutes prior when I saw a blurb on FoxNews.com about it.  I have read a lot about these candidates, but this is the first time I have been able to listen to them speak.

Some of them made no impression at all.  Santorum came across a bit angry and shrill to me and I do not take him too seriously.  Ben Carson was articulate, but did not stand out.  Chris Christie should run as a Democrat.  I think he does not understand what he was doing there.  He came across like he was running against Hillary for the same party.

Carly Fiorina came across well and made interesting points.  [mc_name name=’Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’G000359′ ] and Rick Perry both came across as folksy.  I cringed when Rick Perry made the same mistake as in 2012, castigating people who don’t agree with him like they are truly wrong.  I forgot the topic, but it left me looking at him a bit weary.

Pataki, Walker, and Jindal kind of blended into the background.  They did not pique my interest at all.

Listening to all of them, though, the stand-outs were [mc_name name=’Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001098′ ], [mc_name name=’Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’R000595′ ], Jeb Bush, John Kasich and [mc_name name=’Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’P000603′ ], for different reasons.  Marco Rubio and [mc_name name=’Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’P000603′ ] actually came down in my estimation because neither of them connected with me on my core issues.  They were both underwhelming, and that surprised me because I expected Marco Rubio to be more commanding.

John Kasich and Jeb Bush both seemed very comfortable as candidates and they both didn’t seem so desperate to sell me on their viability.  Some of the other candidates just seemed kind of desperate to convince me they were a viable candidate.  They both came across very polished.

[mc_name name=’Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’C001098′ ] stood out.  Of all of them, he hit me square with issues where I felt like he had passion and was fighting for my interests.  So he just rose in my estimation and from my standpoint, he won the “debate”.  Of course, that is just my opinion, but I did enter into this with an open mind.  I will be anxious to see what happens Thursday when Donald Trump gets thrown into the mix.
