1. Time to Enjoy the Effects of Brown’s Victory
For conservatives and Republicans, the next few days and weeks will be ones to savor. Scott Brown’s win yesterday will force Democrats to consider just how many seats they’re willing to lose to complete a health care bill. Jim Webb, Brad Ellsworth, Evan Bayh, Joe Lieberman, and Anthony Weiner were all willing to come out and call for a rethink yesterday – before the results in Massachusetts were really clear. No less a liberal leader than Barney Frank thinks it’s time to sue for peace.It will be almost impossible for Democrats to continue with health care as if nothing happened.Beyond the effect on the policy debate, the Massachusetts result really does show that there’s no such thing as an unwinnable race this year. 3. Jim “Wellington” DeMint: Winner
Jim DeMint declared Obamacare to be Barack Obama’s “Waterloo.” It was. And like Napoleon, Obama is defeated (for now at least). Like Wellington, DeMint has been throwing the punches and scoring the points more effectively than many of his colleagues, which has them privately perturbed at the senator’s growing popularity among the GOP base.Now DeMint has another scalp from the Obama administration and another huge win. Shortly after the Christmas Day attempted bombing of the Delta flight, the Obama machine began an offensive against DeMint for putting a hold on Erroll Southers, the White House’s nominee to head the TSA.DeMint had tied up the nomination despite Southers sailing through committee with little opposition. Had DeMint not held up Southers, we would have never known the White House never fully vetted Southers. Further, video came out of Southers claiming “Christian identity” groups like the KKK and pro-lifers were a bigger national security threat than Islamic terrorists. While Media Matters desperately tried to spin this out of the way, Southers was trapped by his own words, including a plea for the U.S. to ditch Israel as an ally.Yesterday, with the Democrats losing their filibuster proof Senate majority that hasn’t done them any good anyway, Erroll Southers has withdrawn his nomination.Please click here for the rest of the post.
4. Unplug Education. No Computers In Schools.
A hot issue today in education is the usefulness of computers in the classroom. Some people – President Obama among them – argue that increasing resources should be spent to bring more computers and more internet access into schools and integrate them into education. The controversy, whether at the federal level or the local school board level, is usually over whether this is worth the expense. But the reality is that what our kids need most of all from schools – and libraries – is a respite from technology and time to give sustained, uninterrupted attention to learning the academic basics that they can then apply to any technological platform – just like the people who created those platforms in the first place. 5. Wow. Marc Thiessen Smokes Amanpour and Sands
I had wanted to make my way through Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack before writing about it (full disclosure: Regnery Publishing, like us, is owned by Eagle Publishing, Inc.), but in light of tonight’s interview between Marc Thiessen and Christiane Amanpour, I need to write about it now.You are going to want this book. It is an in-depth account of not just how the CIA kept us from having more domestic terror attacks after 9/11, but also how Obama has begun systematically making us vulnerable again.I ask on a near weekly basis how many of us are going to get killed because of what Obama is doing on the national security front. This book suggests a great many more of us than any of us thought possible.And tonight, Thiessen was supposed to debate Phillipe Sands with Amanpour moderating. Instead, Amanpour interjected herself into the debate after Thiessen confronted her with her own words and the roller coaster interview began.. . .What makes it so spectacular is that Thiessen reads to Amanpour her own words and tells her what she said “is completely false.” She goes ballastic and he proceeds to then mop the floor with her.Please click here for the rest of the post.
