Georgetown Students to Vote on Proposed New Fee to Pay Reparations to Descendants of Slaves Sold by University in 1838
According to Jennifer Kabbany, editor of The College Fix, the student government of Georgetown University has scheduled a vote to decide if a new semesterly fee should be added to pay reparations to the families of 272 slaves the university sold in 1838.
Over the last several years, the University has focused on how they can best reckon with their “legacy of slavery.” Georgetown offered an official apology in 2017.
The following excerpts from the student government resolution discusses what steps the University has already taken and what additional measures they are planning.
In seeking to make amends, campus officials have renamed two buildings on campus named after the Jesuits who were involved in the sale of the slaves and created an African American Studies Department and a working group on the establishment of an Institute for the Study of Racial Justice. The university has also agreed to “offer an admissions edge to descendants of slaves as part of a comprehensive atonement” for the school’s past actions.
In the fall of 2016, the Georgetown University Working Group on Slavery, Memory, and Reconciliation published its report and recommendations for how the University should address this shameful history. To date, Georgetown has implemented only some of them.
Among the recommendations left unfulfilled are the establishment of financial aid for the descendant community, the creation of public memorials to the enslaved persons, and the continuation of the ‘Freedom and Remembrance’ Grant Program.
As students at an elite institution, we recognize the great privileges we have been given, and wish to at least partially repay our debts to those families whose involuntary sacrifices made these privileges possible.
What do you all think about these initiatives? Too much? Maybe setting a dangerous precedent?

Two Labradors Save Life of Florida Woman After Stroke
In December, St. Augustine, Florida resident Maureen Hatcher suffered a stroke in her home. Immediately, she fell to the floor. Hatcher told NBC Affiliate WTLV, “I remember Sadie coming in. I said, ‘Mommy needs help,’ and then they were gone.”
Her labradors, Sadie and Bella, were caught on video running for help. The dogs can been seen in footage from Hatcher’s front-door camera running out of the house just moments before a neighbor comes over, finds her and calls 911.
Hatcher was rushed to a hospital in Jacksonville where doctors were able to remove a blood clot that cut off the blood flow to the right side of her brain and prevent permanent brain damage.
“I’m blessed, very blessed,” Hatcher said.
Please watch the video above.
I wouldn’t want to live in a world without dogs!
