THE PRICE OF FREEDOM IS VIGILANCE — AND A POTENT FRONT KICK
The RedState users say ‘us too’!
MINOR UPDATE (05JAN2009):
Over 70 regular users have signed on, others have Reco’ed. And at this point Israel has ground troops conducting operations and engaging Hamas thugs in Gaza. Looks like they are not going to stop short of Baghdad, so to speak. Good on them! [and I saw that, Jeff]
Today (12/29/2008) the Directors at RedState spoke eloquently in support of Israel as Israel has over the last 2 days launched lethally effective air strikes at Hamas and rocket launch sites (as usual, placed in and near civilian areas) in Gaza, in territory recently ceded by Israel. Gratitude for Israel’s giving over Gaza to the Palestinians has been expressed over the months — in classic Islamist terrorist style — by ever-more-frequent, ever-more-deep-range rocket attacks into Israeli territory.
Predictably, Israel stands alone, or nearly so. The UN, various European capitals, and most corners of the Middle East have failed to surprise anybody, bleating against the evil Israeli aggressors, and laying blame at Israel’s feet for inevitable civilian casualties. There are indications that the airstrikes are merely the prelude to more substantive acts by Israel in an effort to eradicate the threat posed by Islamist terrorists dedicated to the extinction of Israel. Troops are amassed at the border, and the defense minister has described it as “war to the bitter end”.
A nation has a right — in fact, a duty — to defend its own citizens and its own existence. That is one of the most basic tenets of conservatism, and in fact seems the most basic of commonsensical propositions. It simplifies things that Hamas has declared in so many words, and in a multitude of dastardly acts, their intention to eradicate Israel. Israel is, in my opinion, fully within its rights to retake Gaza, and in fact blast Syria, Hamas’ headquarters and safe haven, into rubble. Israel has over the years practiced extraordinary restraint in dealings with these barbarians, and their decision to take off the gloves and get nasty is the right thing to do.
But as Edmund Burke said: All that’s necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing. Israel has grown tired of doing nothing.
Without further gilding the lily, I wish, as a RedState user, to add my endorsement of Israel’s actions in the Gaza matter. I wholeheartedly support the endorsement given by the RedState directors. If anyone is with me, I will happily list your name along with mine. Just say so in the comments.
