I believe the collective stir-craziness of America has caused the media to shine a light on a murder out of Brunswick, Georgia in what is sure to become a future episode of Dateline. I speak of the death of Ahmaud Arbery back in February of this year. AOC has peered into her magical crystal ball which informed her in imperfect Spanish, “Ahmaud Arbery was murdered for being black.” Joe Biden, taking a break from being spoon-fed Gerber’s banana-mango baby food, said without reservation, “Ahmaud Arbery was killed in cold blood.” LeBron James tweeted out: “We’re literally hunted everyday/ everytime [Sic] we step foot outside the comfort of our homes. Can’t even go for a damn jog man.” I’m not quite sure what James is talking about here with “hunts” and who the “we” is, but I venture its a lot safer to jog the streets of Brunswick, Georgia than it is to run through any street in the Republic of Congo…or even Chicago. I also venture that LeBron jogs in a white-majority neighborhood. Incidentally, the Black Panthers are now patrolling the neighborhood in Brunswick where Arbery was killed.
This case seems to be pretty clear-cut as it was apparently filmed, unlike the two previous cases of a similar nature- Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin. Yes- in all three cases, the dead person is black and the “killers” are not black. However, there is something else in terms of similarities: all three were killed after confronting someone with a gun, or trying to pull a gun out of someone’s hands. Now putting aside collective retardation and all the emotion, you realize that it is not nearly as dangerous to jog while being black than it is to attempt to grab a loaded gun out of another’s hands. I cannot speak for Arbery, but if I saw someone holding a shotgun, the last thing I would do is don my Superman vest and try to wrest the gun from the guy.
The purpose of this diary entry is not “whataboutism” and tales of black-on-black crime and black-on-white crime, or to inundate the reader with crime statistics. However, as more information comes out, we are learning that some toothless hillbillies did not go “black hunting” one day. You have to dig a little to find the story, but Mr. Arbery is not exactly a pinnacle of the community. For example, he was indicted for bringing a loaded Big Bear .380 pistol to a high school basketball game, then fled the scene (or did he jog away from the scene?). In 2018, he was caught shoplifting a TV from Wal-Mart and violating the terms of his probation for the gun charge. Now we learn that Greg McMichael, one of the “toothless hillbillies,” worked on the shoplifting case as part of his duties as a police officer. Maybe McMichael did not profile Arbery because he was black, but because he had a penchant for carrying guns, stealing televisions and running from the scenes of crimes. Just a thought…
Some have gloated that the suspicions of McMichael (there had been burglaries in the area) have been proven false because one police officer said something to the local news. But hold your horses: McMichael himself reported someone stole a pistol from his truck outside his house in January. Late last year, a reported $2,500 in fishing gear was stolen at a construction site. Glyn County reported three other calls of trespassing at a construction site. Perhaps these trespassers were just out for a jog, or looking for a convenience store that stocked Skittles.
Regardless, it appears that way too many have jumped to conclusions here. How many times do we have to suffer a Jussie Smollett, or Covington kids, or Tawana Brawley, a Michael Brown or Trayvon Martin before journalists and the talking heads do what we expect of our jurors: listen to or at least wait for all the facts before we form opinions? Why must it always be racial?
That being said, I personally don’t care about the McMichaels and I don’t know about their guilt or innocence. For all I know, they could be hood-wearing proud Klansmen. I don’t know why they called 911 or why they decided to give chase, have a shotgun on them, or even confront Arbery. That is a job for the jury who does get to hear all the facts. My best guess is that it all comes down to whether it is legal to shoot someone if they grab for your gun (I’m assuming McMichael had the proper permit for the gun).
Of course, some people might view this as a defense of the McMichaels. Just because someone highlights the fact that the media is not telling the whole story does NOT mean anyone is justifying what could be a cold-blooded murder. Most of America is ignorant of the basic rules of logic. It also means that there is a great swath of America that wants or needs America to be more racist than what it actually is which is why they sometimes cook up the latest racial incident du jour.
Maybe those people should go take a long jog in the Republic of Congo.
