The White House is abandoning a renewal of the 1994 assault weapon ban. The ban expired in 2004. Although Obama promised supporters he would seek to renew it, lack of support on both sides of the aisle, has pushed it to the back burner.
From MSNBC dot com:
Campaigning before a church congregation on Chicago’s South Side one Sunday in July 2007, Barack Obama said an epidemic of big city violence was “sickening the soul of this nation.”
Among the potential cures, he said, was permanently reinstating a ban on assault weapons.
The only thing gun laws do is prevent law abiding citizens from of protecting their persons and property from infringement. Thomas Jefferson summed up gun laws best when he said:
“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms..disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed one.”
Refreshingly, although supported by Eric Holder and Hillary Clinton, sixty-five house democrats informed the White House that they would actively oppose reinstating a ban on assault weapons. Additionally, senate majority leader Harry Reid, considers the ban “political poison”.
By the time President Obama made his trip to Mexico, he conceded the battle would be futile. “None of us are any illusion that reinstating that ban would be easy.”
“What we’re focused on is how we can improve our enforcement of existing laws,” he said.
Ironically, news of this victory for the Second Amendment, falls on the 94th anniversary of the Armenian/Forgotten Genocide. On April 24th, 1915, the Ottoman Turks began the extermination of 1.5 million Armenians living in Turkey. Not coincidentally, the genocide was preceded by draconian gun laws disarming the Armenians, rendering them helpless, and making them easy prey.
God help us!
