There appears to be no end to liberal lunacy. The Governor of Oregon, Ted Kulongoski, is asking the legislature to consider a new plan for taxing his people into oblivion in the form of a mileage tax. The scheme involves using GPS technology to track the number of miles each Oregonian drives in state and levying a tax per mile. He is trying to sell it as “a path to transition away from the gas tax as the central funding source for transportation.”.
The “necessity” of an additional tax is the direct result of another asinine liberal policy/idea/religion. That of combating non-existent global warming. Oregonians, like the rest of America, have been hammered relentlessly to drive less, to use less fuel, and ultimately reverse the effects of man-made global warming. Like most sane people, Oregonians laughed and kept driving. Until gas hit $4.50 a gallon. At that point, they started driving less. Less driving also meant less gas tax revenue for the legislature to squander mindlessly. Government can never do with less so now it wants to make up the loss of gas tax revenue with a tax on mileage.
From the Democrat Herald dot com:
“As Oregonians drive less and demand more fuel-efficient vehicles, it is increasingly important that the state find a new way, other than the gas tax, to finance our transportation system.”
What about privacy issues?
“The concept requires no transmission of vehicle travel locations, either in real time or of travel history,” the report said. “Accordingly, no travel location points are stored within the vehicle or transmitted elsewhere. Thus there can be no ‘tracking’ of vehicle movements.”
Pardon me for not believing a word in the above excerpt. Apparently the system tracks the distance between point A and point B but not where points A and B are. Sure! Remind me to check Oregon off on the list of possible states to move to.
God help us!
