Wisc. Gov't Unions' Favorite Candidate May Not Make it Out of the Primary Tuesday

Incredibly interesting things going on in Wisconsin (so what’s new?).

Public employee unions have already spent more than $8 million in their effort to recall Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) according to campaign finance reports reviewed by the MacIver News Service. There are 5 weeks until the June 5 general election when it is expected that Governor Walker will face either former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk or Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

The leading union contributor, financially, is the Wisconsin Education Association Council (the Wisc. NEA affiliate), which has spent more than $3.7 million, including $3 million in contributions to the Wisconsin for Falk Super PAC. According to public documents made available by the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, AFSCME has contributed more than $1.2 million to Wisconsin for Falk and the SEIU has given $500,000 to the We Are Wisconsin PAC.

Mahlon Mitchell, a public employee union lobbyist from Madison, is favored to be the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor.

Back to the Governor’s recall, Kathleen Falk has received almost all of of the public employee labor union money and muscle, but she still lags Barrett in the polls leading up to Tuesday’s Democratic Primary.

Falk, the endorsed candidate of most of the state’s public employee unions, is trailing Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett in every publicly-released poll, including a recent survey released this week by Marquette University. That poll had Barrett up 38-21 over Falk. Running a distant third and fourth in the poll were Secretary of State Doug La Follette (8) and State Senator Kathleen Vinehout (6). La Follette and Vinehout could play spoiler, however, helping Barrett achieve a victory with a plurality, but not majority, of Primary votes Tuesday.

Lest you think, however, that they are giving up, the unions are doubling down. With their favored candidate for Governor trailing in the polls despite benefiting from more than $5 million in support, Big Government Labor Unions are going all out for a last-minute grassroots blitz in the final weekend before next Tuesday’s Primary.

The local chapters of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees are gathering at more than thirty staging areas in communities throughout Wisconsin to make calls and go door-to-door for her. Read more from the MacIver News Service, here.
