An arrest was made Sunday in the attempted stabbing of GOP Congressional Candidate Randy Peters. This happened in California over the weekend.
Witnesses told police that Fazeli approached Peters “aggressively” while he was at the Castro Valley Fall Festival and “made disparaging, profanity-laced remarks about the Republican party and President Donald Trump.”
Law enforcement officials say that Fazeli then tried attacking Peters with a switchblade knife but failed as the knife malfunctioned. Peters then reportedly engaged in a physical confrontation with Fazeli until he fled the scene.
The Mercury News reported that Fazeli “was initially arrested on suspicion of felony assault, criminal threats, brandishing a weapon and possession of a switchblade knife,” and was later booked into Santa Rita Jail.
Mr. Fazeli was clearly politically motivated according to multiple witnesses. He was musing about Donald Trump and making threatening statements before the incident occurred. Peters has a lot to be thankful for today. The only reason Fazeli didn’t succeed in seriously injuring or killing the Republican candidate is because he couldn’t get the switchblade to come out.
Surely, someone committing a political motivated attack on a Congressional candidate is worthy of at least part of a news cycle right? Nah, Peters is a Republican so it’s not worth talking about.
At the time of writing this, of all the mainstream outlets, only The Hill and the LA Times (which is almost forced to mention it being in California) have even reported on the incident.
What could have possibly prompted this nut job to lash out and act on his impulses? We can’t know for sure but this comes right after Maxine Waters, a Californian Congressional member, doubled down on her rhetoric that Trump supporters should be shown they aren’t welcome “anywhere.”
“There are those who said we lacked civility when I got up and talked about the President’s Cabinet, and I said if you see them anywhere, if you see them at a restaurant, if you see them in a department store, even at a gasoline station, just tell them you’re not welcome here or anywhere,” Waters said to cheers.
“And so, it frightened a lot of people, and of course the lying president said that I had threatened all of his constituents,” Waters said. “I did not threaten his constituents, his supporters. I do that all the time, but I didn’t do it that time,” she said.
Now, imagine for a second that Donald Trump had told his supporters something similar and that one of those supporters then attempted to stab a Democratic Congressional candidate. Do you think that maybe CNN, NBC, et al would at least mention it?
Of course they would. This would of been a week long story complete with hundreds of panels blaming the President for violent rhetoric and promoting an uncivil society.
Yet, because we are dealing with another attack on a Republican, the media suddenly becomes mute.
The same holds true for NBC, The Washington Post, etc. It’s an almost total blackout of even basic reporting, much less editorial push back. Jim Acosta getting harmlessly heckled at a Trump rally was grounds for two weeks worth of breathless chastising.
A Republican Congressional Candidate almost being stabbed, though? Meh, whatever.
But seriously folks, it’s Fox News’ fault that people distrust the media. Keep it straight.
