Asylum—the Next Frontier in Devastating American Society

New verification of Lord Acton’s declaration that “absolute power corrupts absolutely” is at hand today. A report from the Washington Times tells us that the ever-busy Department of Homeland Security issued a 27-page training-guidance document from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, last week, that says: “Women who flee Central America because they fear being single heads of households can be deemed part of a targeted social group and can make claims of ‘credible fear’ of being targeted in their home countries.”

Such a woman, showing up at a port of entry, can take her place—surely with her family—“on the path to asylum.” That means legal status to remain in the U.S.

The documents, which have been obtained by the Judiciary Committees in the House and Senate, also say “victims of gang crimes, which are epidemic in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, can make the case that they fear retaliation — also proving a ‘credible fear’ and earning a place on the pathway to getting asylum in the U.S.”

Other eligible categories include: “witnessing a gang crime,” or “a woman whose husband abandoned her and who received threats from a gang because she no longer lived with her husband.”

“It changes the standards. It’s breathtaking in its liberalities in regard to what a refugee is,” commented [mc_name name=’Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’S001141′ ] (R-AL), chair of the Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee.

Asylum is meant to protect people targeted for “‘immutable characteristics,’” such as their race or religion, and who fear harm or death if they are forced to return to their home countries,” asserted the Washington Times.

Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies called the doctrine “absurd” and a “unilateral rewriting of immigration laws.”

What shall we call it? How about: ripping up the Constitution, defying the law, the incremental deconstruction of our society, kicking [mc_name name=’Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)’ chamber=’senate’ mcid=’M000355′ ] in his flank, even after he licked the president’s to confirm Loretta Lynch? How about all of the above?

The guidance also said: “If the gang didn’t mention the woman’s living alone or being a single mother in its threats, … then she wouldn’t qualify.” This was, no doubt, Ms. Vaughan’s inspiration in calling the guidance an “instruction handbook” for the right words to utter when confronted by a border control agent. Do we still have border control agents?

One hopes the DHS remembered to place ads in El Salvador’s El Faro, the Guatemala Times and the Honduras News, so a sufficient number of totally dependent, skill-less individuals will show up. Or will we fly these families in also?

Heritage.org provided the following statistics, in a 2006 article, aptly titled “Importing Poverty”:

“Fully 42 percent of the children of Hispanic immigrants are born out of wedlock. Hispanic immigrants thus make up a disproportionate share of the nation’s poor:

“First-generation Hispanic immigrants and their families now comprise 9 percent of the U.S. population but 17 percent of all poor persons in the U.S.; and children in Hispanic immigrant families now comprise 11.7 percent of all children in the U.S. but 22 percent of all poor children in the U.S.

“Low-skill immigrants pay little in taxes and receive high levels of government benefits and services. The National Academy of Sciences has estimated that each immigrant without a high school degree will cost U.S. taxpayers, on average, $89,000 over the course of his or her lifetime.

“This is a net cost above the value of any taxes the immigrant will pay and does not include the cost of educating the immigrant’s children, which U.S. taxpayers would also heavily subsidize.

Illegal Aliens Cross Border, Immediately Surrender to Border Patrol.

“In this way, the roughly six million legal immigrants without a high school diploma will impose a net cost of around a half-trillion dollars on U.S. taxpayers over their lifetimes….

“However, if these illegal immigrants were granted amnesty and citizenship, … they could cost taxpayers an additional half-trillion dollars…. If the cost of educating the immigrants’ children is included, that figure could reach two trillion dollars.”

This is a report from 2006, using statistics from 2004, and do not take into account Obamacare entitlement; so these numbers are necessarily highly conservative.

Obama recently legalized close to 6 million illegals (temporarily stayed by Judge Hanen), and has yet to take a day of rest.

Thus we rapidly progress toward banana republic-hood.

Does Karl Rove still think Congress is working as the Founders intended it to, as he said in a recent WSJ op-ed? As for the ten Republicans who gave Obama what he wanted yesterday: Sic semper sulti.

Will this be the last straw for Majority Leader McConnell?
