Our UN contribution at work

K-lo at the Corner points out a new effort from our friends at the UN. University of the Poeple: a tuition-free college education for those for whom it was just a pipe dream.

But as they say, the devil is in the details. Here are the modest requirements:

  • you have access to a computer
  • you can access the internet on that computer
  • you can afford the admission fee (and presumably have the ability to pay on-line)
  • you can afford the fee you have to pay for every test taken
  • you have a HS education
  • you can speak English

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the requirements exclude about 99% of the intended audience?

I suspect what will come next is that we are asked to bump our UN contribution up some ‘nominal’ amount – maybe an extra $25M/year will do – so that we can make this available to the people who need it most by supplying computers and internet access to every corner of the globe and by making it available in at least 50 different languages.
