What’s that, you say? You heard the opposite? Well, then you don’t know Karl Rove.
“Rove called Lieberman,” recounted a second source. “Lieberman told him he would not make that call.”
“Rove is pushing Romney so aggressively some folks are beginning to wonder what’s going on,” grumbled one veteran Republican strategist.
Rove is very astute about the way his public persona is perceived. So sometimes he does things that are intended to achieve a result, a greater purpose. In this case, the result is: this is the guy Rove doesn’t want. By picking him, McCain splits away from Bush and defies Rove. What an excellent little piece of strategy.
We can assume from these reports that Rove thinks Lieberman, the guy who goes away in four years, is the best choice – and in fact, is willing to play his part in the media eye to achieve that goal.
