Democratic answer to illegal immigration - crush the economic incentive to come here

During the president’s amnesty announcement on Thursday night, he said this – “Overall, the number of people trying to cross the border illegally is at its lowest level since the 1970’s. Those are the facts.”

Obama is exclusively addressing the low-information class, and possibly those for whom English is a 2nd language (he made his announcement during Univision’s telecast of the Latin Grammy’s with the understanding that the network would air his remarks live). He wants his dwindling flock to believe that this “fact” is a good thing, and a result of something positive that he’s accomplished. Ask yourself this – what immigration policy initiative has Obama enacted that would explain any reduction in illegal immigration?

The answer, of course, is none. In fact, all he’s done is exacerbate illegal immigration with his previous offering of executive amnesty, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. That stroke of his majesty’s pen resulted in an avalanche of minors crossing our borders illegally and caused a crisis in dealing with them, so much that spontaneous protests of concerned citizens erupted as bankrupt local and state government agencies attempted to process the crush of humanity when it peaked earlier this year. It is inarguable that DACA was causal in the enormous increase in illegal border crossings that ensued.

So it’s truly remarkable that, in spite of significant incentive that DACA created for entering our country illegally and the resulting mass of illegal border crossings that it caused, the overall number of illegal crossings is low relative to recent history. And yes, it is undoubtedly true that Obama’s policies and those of his democrat party allies are indeed responsible. Not policies related to immigration, but policies that are crushing our economy – energy, environment, minimum wage, Obamacare, taxes…all of these policies that are tying the hands of business owners, managers, and employers and keeping them from expanding and hiring, keeping the labor force participation rate at record low levels, diminishing opportunities for young people and dragging down wages for those still fortunate to have full-time employment. Policies that were all soundly defeated in the recent midterm elections.

Obama’s success in reducing illegal border crossings has been entirely the result of crushing economic opportunity and tamping down the economic incentive to come here. And for this we are to offer our thanks and praise? It reminds me of his effort to take credit for the booms in oil and natural gas production that have occurred during his reign – all of which occurred in spite of, and not because of, his actions. The truth is that, the only effect his new executive amnesty will have on illegal immigration is to increase it.

Reducing illegal immigration would be as simple as enforcing current law. That would be much less ruinous than making our economy more similar to that of the countries that those who are crossing our southern border illegally are fleeing – an achievement that Obama continues to strive for.
