"(Congressman Anthony) Weiner Facts" (as requested by Glenn Beck)

Congressman/Obama lapdog Anthony Weiner (D-NY) has declared war on Glenn Beck and his sponsor Goldline, and Beck is fighting back. Beck started a website called Weiner Facts.

I’ve been preparing this for several hours (putting the two kids to sleep took much longer than expected), and I see that “Yid with Lid” got here before me. I mostly agree with his conclusions:

After multiple (unsuccessful) attempts by the White House to silence Glenn Beck by leading advertiser boycotts, the President has decided to change tactics by taking his Weiner
dog off the leash so he could go after the Commentators advertisers criminally.

So yesterday, the NY Congressman, who seeks direction from the White House for everything from what to say on the house floor to when he can go to the potty, had a press conference where he went after Beck as well as one of his advertisers.
The problem is Weiner’s desperately trying to please his handler in the White House the same way he went from being a big supporter of Israel to being silent as the President threw the Jewish State under the bus.

Now he is grasping at anything to help the president silence anyone who disagrees with the Progressive agenda.

That’s the gist of what this is really all about. It’s not about Goldline, although I will discuss Goldline. It’s all about silencing an Obama critic.

I am an editor on the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink and I co-wrote a book on the origin of the name “hot dog.” Some of my website work on the “weiner” can be found here:

From today’s Glenn Beck show on Fox News:

When Anthony Weiner Attacks
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
By Glenn Beck
REP. ANTHONY WEINER, D-N.Y.: There also seems to be an unholy alliance taking place between conservative commentators and this industry.

One thing that we know for sure is that Goldline is a rip-off and they are a very sophisticated, multi-media rip-off.
What are the odds that the president doesn’t know three of his advisers and one congressman is doing this to one show? How afraid they must be to spend all this time and money on little old me.

By the way, in a completely unrelated story, Weiner had a busy day Tuesday: He launched this attack on me and then a little later in the day he met with the president. Totally coincidental.

Oh, one other completely unrelated story, Weiner’s newly hired press secretary, until recently, worked at Media Matters — a George Soros-funded spin machine for the left.

Weiner used the term “unholy alliance” in his press release as well. From Politico:

May 17, 2010
Goldline girds for Weiner assault
“The company has formed an unholy alliance with conservative pundits to drive a false narrative and play off public fears in order to sell its products,” says the release. Coming soon to MSNBC…

Unholy alliance? Since when does Congress investigate holy alliances? Are Goldline and Glenn Beck “unholy” according to the Bible? The Koran? The Book of Mormon? How could any Congressman use “unholy alliance” in a press release? This isn’t just war–it’s a holy war!

The liberal playbook allows for free speech for everyone–except conservatives. You can have an Israel Apartheid Week on every college campus in the country, spouting anti-Semitism and encouraging violence, and it’s all wonderful. But if a Glenn Beck spouts conservative/libertarian philosophy. he must be completely destroyed. It’s not enough to simply not watch Glenn Beck. He must be destroyed.

The FDA went after Zicam, a major sponsor of Rush Limbaugh. On May 17th, Media Matters wrote this about LifeLock: “Another Beck sponsor gets dinged.”

Just today, Newshounds gleefully announced “Another Advertiser Drops Beck” (Holiday Inn). Media Matters runs a regular feature such as: “So who’s still advertising on Beck? May 14 edition.”

Media Matters is featuring this story:

Rep. Weiner goes after Beck’s house of gold
May 18, 2010 12:05 pm ET by Will Bunch
Throughout Glenn Beck’s meteoric rise to become king of all right-wing media, a once-obscure Santa Monica peddler of gold coins called Goldline International has been along for the ride. The support of Beck and other radio hosts — mainly conservatives like Mark Levin and Fred Thompson — who spend 55 minutes creating fear of an economic collapse and then five minutes telling you why coins from a company like Goldline are the only safe haven has helped Goldline become a $500 million company.

Goldline supports the right! Goldline must die!

Finally, a grown-up has stepped in to try to clean up this mess — Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York.

Anthony Weiner, a grown=up voice of reason? Oh Media Matters, you’re the funniest site on the web!

At this hour, Weiner is holding a news conference not only to call out Goldline as “a company that uses conservative rhetoric, high pressure sales tactics and tall tales about the future of gold to sell over priced coins that can be bought somewhere else for cheaper,” but to ask regulators from the Federal Trade Commission and Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate its tactics.

FULL GOLD DISCLOSURE: I own gold. I looked at Goldline (Glenn Beck) and Rosland Capital (Glenn Beck) and Lear Capital (Rush Limbaugh). Ultimately, I went with a gold fund, where I don’t have to physically store the gold myself. The fund has been up 33% in about one year. My stocks have basically stayed the same in 10+ years.

Glenn Beck didn’t invent gold. Gold has been valued for many centuries. Gold is a known product. I found that Goldline’s fees were disclosed, and I looked for them. Caveat emptor.

Glenn Beck, in my opinion, has little to nothing to do with gold’s rise. People are buying gold because paper money has been printed into worthlessness. Glenn Beck didn’t collapse the Euro. Glenn Beck didn’t bankrupt Greece. Gold is a widely-traded commodity. Glenn Beck’s financial advice, by itself and without other global conditions, would hardly cause the gold price to rise.

But of course, Beck is doing what he does best and blaming the messengers, accusing them of “McCarthyism” by going after his sponsors. That has nothing to do with this — it’s about consumer protection.

Where was the “consumer protection” about Holiday Inn? Oh yeah, they just left under pressure.

Want to investigate “Progressive” insurance? Do you know that it’s really run by political progressives? Do you know that there are some complaints on the internet that Progressive doesn’t pay squat after an accident? No, there will be no investigation of Progressive. “Flo” will be relieved.

As I mentioned in a post yesterday about Beck’s sponsor LifeLock, I became interested in Beck’s relationship with the type of products he endorses when I was researching my pending book, The Backlash: Right-Wing Radicals, Hi-Def Hucksters and Paranoid Politics in the Age of Obama.

Selling a book, are we? With a title like that? No, it’s not personal against LifeLock and Goldline. The campaign against Beck’s advertisers–EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM–is just a coincidence. It’s not to extinguish political speech and freedom of the press. As Barack Obama said about the coal companies, they can still make coal–they’ll just go bankrupt doing it.

From Wikipedia:

Anthony David Weiner (pronounced /ˈwiːnər/; born September 4, 1964) is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives, representing New York’s 9th congressional district since 1999. The district includes parts of southern Brooklyn and south central Queens. In Queens, the 9th includes the neighborhoods of Forest Hills, Maspeth, Fresh Meadows, Glendale, Howard Beach, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hills, Middle Village, Ozone Park, Rego Park, Rockaway Beach, and Woodhaven. Its Brooklyn section includes Flatlands, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Midwood, Mill Basin and Sheepshead Bay.

Weiner defeated Republican Louis Telano in the 1998 U.S. House election, by a margin of 66%–23%. He was re-elected in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, never receiving below 65%. In the House, he is a member of the Committee on Energy and Commerce and Committee on the Judiciary. He was an unsuccessful candidate for Mayor of New York City in the 2005 mayoral election.

A graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh, Weiner was an aide to then-U.S. Representative Charles Schumer (1985–91) before serving as a member of the New York City Council from 1992 to 1998.

Yep, Weiner was an aide to Chuck Schumer. THat’s pretty much all you need to know.

I think of Weiner and Schumer when I see a post such as Jeff Dunetz’s “Is It OK For a Jew to Be Politically Conservative?” Do they not see the anti-Semitism of the left? Are they comfortable associating with communists and socialists and the labor unions who are bankrupting New York? Do you feel OK being Obama lapdogs and destroying the state of Israel? Can you go to sleep knowing that Obama has done basically nothing and that genocial Iran will have nuclear weapons? You can sleep on that?

Weiner took the SHSAT and entered Brooklyn Technical High School. After graduating from high school in 1981, he attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, where he played hockey. He originally sought to become a television weatherman, but his interests soon turned towards politics and he became very active in student government. Weiner and Jon Stewart, the host of the Comedy Central program The Daily Show, were roommates after college, and Stewart has donated political campaign contributions to Weiner.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Weiner then worked on the staff of then-Congressman and current Senator Chuck Schumer from 1985 to 1991. First working in Schumer’s office in Washington, D.C., he was sent to the district office in Brooklyn in 1988 after Schumer encouraged him to become involved in local politics.

Jon Stewart’s roommate. Of course.

Weiner is known to be one of the most “intense and demanding” members of Congress, oftentimes working long hours with his staff fact-checking documents. As a result, he has one of the highest staff turnover rates of any member of Congress.

Weiner’s press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre left in June 2008 to become Barack Obama’s regional political director (as Erick reported here, she’s a friend of ACORN). Sometimes it seems that liberal staff doesn’t “turn over” but rather just changes positions.

Weiner is an avid advocate of the United States National Health Care Act, which expands Medicare to all Americans.

Medicare’s bankrupt, Anthony. Here in Texas, doctors are refusing Medicare patients because the federal government doesn’t pay 100% of the costs. This is a system that works?

Weiner attracted wide attention when, on February 24, 2010, he proclaimed in front of Congress: “Make no mistake about it, every single Republican I have ever met in my entire life is a wholly owned subsidiary of the insurance industry.”

Every Republican is an insurance industry shill? Ever look at who the insurance industry and Wall Street gave money to in 2008, Anthony?

Weiner is a supporter of abortion rights. In 2003, received a 100% rating from NARAL, and consequently a 0% rating from NRLC. He voted against the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, which made it a crime to perform partial birth abortions. He was strongly critical of the Stupak-Pitts Amendment, which places limits on taxpayer-funded abortions in the context of the November 2009 Affordable Health Care for America Act.

Not good.

In June 2008, Weiner sponsored a bill that would increase the number of H-1B visas available to foreign models. Weiner argued that increasing the number of visas would help boost the fashion industry in New York City.

He still couldn’t get a date.

Weiner is engaged to Huma Abedin, a longtime personal aide of Hillary Clinton, to whom he proposed on May 23, 2009.

Quite a long engagement. They’re supposed to be married this summer. Some have speculated that Huma was more than an aide to a Clinton, but that cannot be verified.

From The Huffington Post:

Weiner also was sure to take a shot at Glenn Beck, telling Olbermann, “I never intended this to be a battle of wits with Glenn Beck, as you know he comes only half-prepared to that battle.”

Weiner is a wit! Get it? Glenn Beck is a “half wit.” This Weiner is so funny! I would say that this remark is beneath a Congressman, but President Obama does the same thing.

Nearly 100% bad.

From VoteReports:

ACORN…100% (Weiner signed an ACORN support letter in October 2008.)
CAMPAIGN FOR AMERICA’S FUTURE (“strategy center for the progressive movement”)…100%

Anthony Weiner–like nearly every politician in New York City–is in the hands of big labor. Small business owners don’t stand a chance.

A truly terrible voting record.

During the TWU’s illegal three-day transit strike in December 2005, Weiner stood with the union against the people of New York City. From Charles Millard’s piece in the New York Post:

The New York Post
Published: 12/22/2005
City Comptroller Bill Thompson and Rep. Anthony Weiner are both likely to run for mayor four years from now. When they do, don’t forget the positions they took in the run up to the transit strike.
A week ago, the TWU staged a hostile and heated rally outside Grand Central Terminal, featuring such moderate speakers as Al Sharpton. At the rally, Thompson spoke in solidarity with the union. And Weiner spoke in particularly strenuous terms, telling the union that “New Yorkers are with you. Your fight is their fight!”

Weiner and Thompson both now claim that they never supported a strike. Oh, no. They were just supporting a fair and balanced settlement.

These two politicians were courting two large constituencies – organized labor generally, and municipal unions specifically – whose interests are inimical to those of most voters. Weiner and Thompson were just hoping you would not notice.

Anthony, you’re Jewish. I’m Jewish. Nazi Germany was very bad to us. America is not like that. If you’re going to compare us to Nazi Germany, take a deep breath and think twice about it, OK?

From Bluegrass Pundit (which has the video):

Thursday, April 29, 2010
Video: Dem Rep. Anthony Weiner Sees Nazis in Arizona
Dem Rep. Anthony Weiner compares the Arizona law, allowing police to enforce immigration law, to Nazi Germany. That is outrageous on its face, but Weiner is lying when he claims people can be stopped on the street and asked for papers. The law only allows checking documents of people after “lawful contact” by police and “reasonable suspicion” of immigration status that may not be solely based on “race, color or national origin.” Everyone arrested will have their immigration status checked before release. The police are not allowed to stop people for the purpose of checking documents. That is not “lawful contact” in Arizona or any other state.

Who cares. Weiner is a wacko.

Just a few more “Weiner Facts.”

Media Matters is in a frenzy tonight:

Mother Jones works its mojo on Beck, Goldline
May 19, 2010 11:46 pm ET by Will Bunch
Glenn Beck has been on the warpath for the last 24 hours both on his radio gig and his Fox News Channel show — accusing Brooklyn Rep. Anthony Weiner as well as Media Matters of “McCarthyism” for writing about his practice of fear-baiting listeners and then pushing them toward sponsors with questionable practices
With the Beck-Goldline debate raging, Mother Jones has entered the fray with the results of its own three-month investigation of the gold coin peddlers, and those results are devastating.

Let’s take a look at the Mother Jones piece:

Glenn Beck’s Golden Fleece
How Beck and other right-wing talkers turned paranoia into a pitch for Goldline, the gold dealer one congressman says is conspiring to “cheat consumers.” A Mother Jones investigation.

And now, with the economy limping along and a black Democrat in the White House, gold mania has gone mainstream.

“Buy gold! There’s a black Democrat in the White House!” The left never stops playing the race card, do they? Hey, lefties! It’s all about the deificit!

A recent New York Times poll found that 1 in 20 self-identified Tea Party members had bought gold in the past year.

That’s actually not very high.

He said the company was unaware of the FTC complaints, and that the BBB complaints represent “less than one-tenth of one percent of total sales.” Gary Almond, head of the L.A.-area BBB, says that Goldline, which has an A-plus rating, appears to be “providing much better service” than many companies of the same size.
Goldline’s unhappy customers have few options. They can’t sue the company in court due to a mandatory arbitration clause in its contracts. And even as it plays up fears of big government, Goldline neatly slips between the regulatory cracks. While it describes its coins as investments, it’s not licensed as an investment company. Its salespeople are not licensed as securities brokers or investment advisors, and therefore are beyond the reach of state or federal agencies charged with keeping brokers honest. When Quirindongo complained to the FTC, Florida securities regulators, and the Department of Justice, he says he got the same response: “Everybody said, ‘That’s gold.’ It’s like stamp collecting. It’s unregulated.”

Let’s check out the comments:

“Nearly every major conservative radio host, including Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger has advertised gold. And of course, Glenn Beck.”

This is why I can’t stand Mother Jones at its worse.

Rachel Maddow, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, and most of the Air America personalities also hyped gold.

Come on Mother Jones, pull your head out of your ass, and live up to whatever reputation you think you had for smart and fearless journalism.

Donorre: liberal gold hawkers
Submitted by Dave Gilson on Tue May. 18, 2010 10:44 PM PDT.
You’re correct that Thom Hartmann and Ed Schultz have plugged gold as well (both for ITM Trading, which like Goldline, likes to cite the 1933 executive gold order). Perhaps you’re mistaken about Maddow, though?

Thanks for making a good point—we will look some more into the lefty talkers who pitch gold and update this story.

Dave Gilson
senior editor, Mother Jones

Some pointed out that Maddow hasn’t hawked gold, but Air America and several liberal talkers clearly have. But no one cares about that.

Okay I called Goldline and asked for information. I received the packet and yes they charge a fee and its stated in their paperwork. Most financial brokers charge fees, banks charge fees, mortgage brokers charges fees. So I guess your point is, that once again, people don’t read before they sign. All you are stating is that once again, Americans are STUPID!

Goldline charges fees, banks charge fees, everyone charges fees. I didn’t like Goldline’s large fees and I went elsewhere.

Gold, the Market, Cramer

When I sold my house last year I had a little extra money after I paid off the credit cards and I invested in some stocks. I watched Cramer’s Mad Money and he did advise to buy gold. His stocks were EGO and GLD. Both of them are up currently. EGO, El Dorado Gold Corporation has only of late gotten on top.

Yes, that’s exactly what I did, too. Forget Goldline.

Okay – first of all – a quick perusal of the Kitco website’s history of gold pricing for the last 10 years shows that gold has been “up” every year for the last 10 years or so – from $276 in December of 2001 to $1195 where it sits right now. So… er… Gold has more than quadrupled in value in less than 10 years. Not bad. Wish I had some. So… did Weiner really say “Gold might not be a good investment?” Did I get that right?

Next, I have to wonder about Weiner’s motives. Glenn Beck (I am NOT a fan) has repeatedly targeted the Obama administration. I have even heard a rumor that President Obama’s staff includes three individuals whose sole job is to follow Beck and try to discredit him. (Maybe something MotherJones might want to look into?) If that’s true, seems like a pretty silly waste of tax payer money. But is Weiner’s tirade more about helping the disgruntled customers of Goldline – and the public at large? Or is it more about targeting a loudmouth opponent of the President by lobbing grenades at a Beck sponsor?

I’m a little confused by something. This article cited 17 complaints to the FTC, by Goldline customers, in a 4 year period and 44 complaints to the BBB in a 3 year period. The article also noted that Goldline has annual sales of $500M. It doesn’t take an economics genius to figure out that Goldline must have – I don’t know – a LOT of customers to do that volume of business – 50-60,000 customers? Maybe a little more or less? Are 61 complaints in 4 years really a sign of a “bad” company. That would be about 1/10th of 1 percent of the customers who complained. Doesn’t seem very ominous to me.

If Goldline charges too much for a coin, you DON’T have to buy it from them.

Exactly. You don’t have to buy from Goldline. Another reader was also wondering about Weiner’s motives:

Glenn Beck…..

Let the buyer beware. Before you invest, know what is the best company for YOU to do business with. Anyone who buys stocks found it wasn’t always in their best interest to own certain ones. Knowledge in key. Glenn Beck has a sponsor get over it. He may not be in line with most of the people who read this but he does make you think and not blindly lead you around like the progressives in our halls of government. Why isn’t anyone looking into Soros, Chicago Climate Exchange, or reading the 10 page bill that Arizona is taking heat for. I find it funny our leaders vote on a 1200+ page bill on health care without reading it but then criticize the Arizona bill without walking in their shoes first. Their rights are ignored for the rights of those who have no allegiance to this country.

Pay no attention to the Chicago Climate Exchange and the $10 trillion cap & trade scam that will ruin the entire United States economy! What’s important is that people could be getting a better deal elsewhere when they want to buy gold!

Hey, Anthony Weiner, did you know that I bought stock highly recommended to me by my broker in a company called Lehman Brothers? Did you know that lehman Brothers had cooked the books? Did you know that the NY Fed (and Tim Geithner) had helped them to cook the books? Do you know that the “independent” rating agency lied and gave Lehman its highest rating? Did you know that the accountants didn’t do their jobs? Do you know that I lost everything because of this massive fraud? Do you know that no one has gone to jail–NO ONE? Do you know that similar fraud was probably going on at other banks? Do you care?

Goldline is not a great way to buy gold, but so what? It does nothing illegal.

The real issue here is Anthony Weiner’s (and Barack Obama’s) effort to silence Glenn Beck.
