Terror trials in New York City are a terrible Obama idea, opposed by nearly everyone in New York and throughout the nation. Obama still hasn’t given up and wants to ram it through, New Yorkers be damned. Thank goodness our president is not an idealogue!
Don’t give up your rotten ideas, Mr. President! The New York Republicans need a recruiting tool!
The latest chapter in this story began on Super Bowl Sunday, in that CBS interview with Katie Couric:
KATIE COURIC Have you ruled out trying confessed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Muhammad in New York City?
PRESIDENT OBAMA: I have not ruled it out, but I think it’s important for us to take into account the practical, logistical issues involved. I mean, if you’ve got a city that is saying no, and a police department that’s saying no, and a mayor that’s saying no, that makes it difficult. But I think that the most important thing for the public to understand is we’re not handling any of these cases any different than the Bush Administration handled them all through 9/11.
They prosecuted the 190 folks in these Article III courts. Got convictions. And those folks are in maximum security prisons right now. And there have been no escapes. And it is a virtue of our system that we should be proud of. Now, what I’ve also said is that, you know, it’s important for us to recognize that when we’re dealing with Al Qaeda operatives, that they may have national security intelligence that we need.
And it’s important to make sure that the processes and procedures we approach with respect to these folks are not identical to the ones that we would use if we’re apprehending the local drug dealer. And that’s why we’ve put in place some very particular ways of dealing with these issues that ensure our security, but also still uphold our due process.
FOLKS? Obama really drives me nuts. “They prosecuted the 190 folks in these Article III courts. Got convictions. And those folks are in maximum security prisons right now.” They’re jihadists! They’re Islamic terrorists! They’re not “folks” like Aunt Bee in Mayberry! TERRORISTS! NOT “FOLKS”! TERRORISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“But I think that the most important thing for the public to understand is we’re not handling any of these cases any different than the Bush Administration handled them all through 9/11.” The military tribunals weren’t set up. They are now. Different situation, Mr. President.
“I mean, if you’ve got a city that is saying no, and a police department that’s saying no, and a mayor that’s saying no, that makes it difficult.” Makes it difficult to ram it down their throats? Makes doing what difficult? Makes doing the right thing and holding military tribunals in Guantanamo difficult?
A “HELL, NO!” in Tuesday’s New York Post editorial:
‘Saying no’ — for a reason

Does President Obama truly fail to understand just how opposed New Yorkers are to holding 9/11 terrorist trials here — and why?
Or does he just reflexively consider anyone who objects to one of his pronouncements obstructionist?
In the latest White House flip-flop on where to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed and his cohorts, Obama said Sunday he has “not ruled out” holding those trials near Ground Zero in lower Manhattan.
(Then again, such trials don’t belong in a civilian courtroom anywhere, let alone just blocks from Ground Zero — given that KSM & Co. are enemy combatants who rightly belong before a military tribunal at Guantanamo.)
New Yorkers don’t want their city to be used as a showcase for the Obama administration’s dubious effort to convince the world of the US justice system’s merits.
Move the trials — now.

Keep the hell out: Obama must stop waffling and move 9/11 terror trial

“I have not ruled it out, but I think it’s important for us to take into account the practical, logistical issues involved,” Obama told Katie Couric on CBS News.
One of the most astonishing aspects of Obama’s struggle to find a location for perhaps the most important trial in American history is that the Justice Department got around to considering those “practical, logistical issues” only after Attorney General Eric Holder decided on New York.
Without consulting Mayor Bloomberg or Police Commissioner Ray Kelly in advance.
Without figuring the cost of security, estimated at $200 million a year, or making provision to pick up the city’s tab.
Without taking into account the extreme, long-term disruptions a trial would visit on downtown neighborhoods.
Without remembering the elemental truth that New Yorkers refuse to be played for chumps – a fact that puts Obama deep in the hole.
Bloomberg is getting ready for the punch. Yesterday, he said he wants the Obama administration to guarantee that the federal government would pay the full freight for the trial that still looms in the city’s future.
The trial that was supposedly abandoned. The trial that should never happen. The trial that should be shipped off to a military tribunal, preferably at Guantanamo Bay.
Did America ever have a worse Commander-in-Chief?
A Commander-in-Chief who cannot correctly pronounce “corpseman”?
A Commander-in-Chief who terrorizes New York City a second time (against its will) and gives Constitutional protections to our wartime enemies?
A Commander-in-Chief who calls the terrorists who planned the World Trade Center attacks that murdered thousands of innocent people as mere “folks”?
