Is Organizing for America audited for 2009? ("Vice President Joe Biden to you")

Is Organizing for America audited for 2009? Can anyone look at the audits? Does the Federal Election Commission have this online? Is this a non-profit or a for-profit organization? Who gives money to it and who gets money from it?

In early 2008, I wanted tickets to see the Hillary Clinton-Barack Obama debate here in Austin. I had to sign up with the Texas Democrats (the only organization that had some tickets) and I got on the Texas Democrats and Organizing for America mailing lists. The e-mails have been interesting opposition research.

Today I got a message from “Vice President Joe Biden” paid by Organizing for America. I’m asked to support a bank tax to “recover every penny loaned to Wall Street during the financial crisis and stop the reckless abuses and excesses that nearly caused the collapse of our financial system in the first place.” But if the banks simply repay TARP funds, what’s the need for the tax?

Biden didn’t use official “VP” letterhead for this OFA message, but why is he allowed to use the title “Vice President Joe Biden” in something that is illegal as a political use of his office?

Can’t wait for Obama’s OFA emergency “Martha Coakley” e-mail.

Barry —

Yesterday, President Obama announced our proposed Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee on the country’s largest banks:

“My commitment is to recover every single dime the American people are owed. And my determination to achieve this goal is only heightened when I see reports of massive profits and obscene bonuses at some of the very firms who owe their continued existence to the American people…We want our money back, and we’re going to get it.”

The fee would recover every penny loaned to Wall Street during the financial crisis and stop the reckless abuses and excesses that nearly caused the collapse of our financial system in the first place.

But the banking industry — among the most powerful lobbies in Washington — is already launching attacks to stop Congress from enacting the proposal.

Barack and I aren’t backing down. But to win, we’ll need the American people to add their voice right away.

Thankfully, OFA supporters are already signing on to a bold statement of support: “We want our money back — and we stand with President Obama to make sure we get it.” You can add your name by clicking here.

The proposal is expected to recoup billions from the big banks, most of it from the ten largest. As the President said, “If these companies are in good enough shape to afford massive bonuses, they are surely in good enough shape to afford paying back every penny to taxpayers.”

There is much more work to do to reform the financial system and create a new era of accountability. But the Financial Crisis Responsibility Fee is a crucial step. And with the banks already working to tear it down, I hope that I can count on you to speak out to show that Americans stand with us as we take them on.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s certainly worth fighting for. I’m glad you’re in this fight with us.

Thank you for making it possible,

Vice President Joe Biden

FYI, “President Barack Obama” uses his title in these e-mails as well:

Help for Haiti

Barry —

On Tuesday, a catastrophic earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the death toll — already in the thousands — is climbing fast.

This is the worst earthquake to hit the area in more than 200 years. Entire communities have been ripped apart and as many as 3 million people have been directly affected, including tens of thousands of American citizens who are in Haiti.

Our neighbors in Haiti are racing to confront the enormous devastation — and the OFA community can help.

Click here for more information about essential relief efforts and ways you can help today.

Footage is pouring in of homes collapsing, Haitians carrying injured family members, and hospitals being overrun in what was already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

I have directed my administration to respond with a swift, coordinated, and aggressive effort to save lives. Personnel from the United States and our partners in the international community are on the ground in damaged areas right now, working side by side with the Haitian people. They’re providing much-needed food, water, and sanitation supplies, saving lives and helping local communities start to rebuild.

Despite the fact that we are experiencing tough times here at home, I encourage those who can to reach out and help. It’s in times like these that we must show the kind of compassion and humanity that has defined the best of our national character for generations.

As this story continues to unfold, I hope you will continue to keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers, as well as the many Haitian-Americans who have done so much to enrich our country and who are worried about friends and loved ones in this time of need.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama
