Monday would have been Barry Sadler’s 70th birthday. Staff Sargent Sadler would have likely passed into the hereafter in obscurity had it not been for this song that went to #1 for five weeks in 1966.

With the bustle of 21st Century life so filled with work, family, politics and survival, its sometimes easy to forget the millions of men who have fought around the world for our freedom and comfort. In this Age of Obama, when we see our President apologizing for our nation and bowing to foreign potentates, one has to struggle to avoid cynicism and pessimism.

Songs such as the Ballad of the Green Berets remind us of how much we owe to so many. Next Thursday is Veterans Day. Let us never forget what they did. Let us never forget what they do.
