Why is Public Radio encouraging conversion to Islam?

The following announcement was read this morning on Michigan Public Radio:

Michigan Radio is partnering with Calvin College and the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies to host an event that will explore Michigan’s diverse Muslim population. The Muslims in Michigan Community Conversation will take place on Wednesday, April 12, at 7 pm at the Calvin College Commons Lecture Hall in Grand Rapids

The Michigan Public Radio Web site explains, ” Panelists for the event will include an Imam from the Grand Rapids area, a Calvin College Muslim student, and other members of West Michigan’s Muslim community. This event is an extension of Michigan Radio’s “Muslims in Michigan” radio series, which aired in 2010. That series explored topics such as sharia law, halal meats, the recent construction of a new mosque in Grand Rapids, and a profile of individual Muslims who had recently converted to Islam.”

Here is a description of the underlying program:

The Muslims in Michigan project was formed out a partnership between Michigan Radio and the University of Michigan Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies. This five part radio series examines life for Muslim people living in Michigan. Beyond religion, the series explores the cultural, political, ethnic, and social lives of this diverse group. This project also features film events, speakers, and a community conversation. The calendar can be found on the Events page.

The radio series premieres on April 12, 2010 and will air during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Will someone please explain to me why public funds are appropriate in what appears to be a campaign to convert Americans to Islam?

Michigan Radio’s website is here www.michiganradio.org

I can imagine the outcry should a similar program be produced seeking conversion to Evangelical Christianity or to Judaism.   What I cannot imagine, however, is a movement within either of those religions to supplant the American Constitution with something as insidious as Sharia law.
