According to conventional wisdom, Donald Trump accomplished the impossible on his visit to Mexico to meet President Enrique Peña Nieto.
After all, he went “into the belly of the beast” to meet the president of Mexico and discuss perhaps the most divisive issues between the two countries: illegal immigration and building the wall.
Some predicted the meeting would be a disaster for Trump; that he would be embarrassed by a hostile leader shaming Trump on his turf.
However, Trump did not bluster and argue as his opponents imagined or hoped for, but instead he talked with Peña Nieto and found common points of agreement.
Following their private talk, Trump and Peña Nieto shared the stage to give supportive statements.
Mexico is being torn apart by being the superhighway for the world’s illegals–from South and Central America, countries that harbor terrorists, and from all parts of the world. Mexico is also under siege from drug cartels, human traffickers and smugglers.
President Peña Nieto understood how building the wall would help shut down the illegal superhighway for the world’s illegals and criminals, and therefore would actually benefit his nation more than an open border.
Peña Nieto also reads the polls and knows there’s an even chance he will be glad to have built a good relationship with Trump.
It is revealing that Hillary Clinton has not yet accepted Peña Nieto’s invitation as well. Perhaps she did not want to draw attention to her plans to further open our border and bring in millions more illegal immigrants, and she would be seen as laughably hypocritical after attacking Trump for his meeting.
Donald Trump showed the American people and the world that he is a thoughtful and masterful negotiator and diplomat, and would be one of the great leaders of the free world.
