Erick has said a couple of times that he wants to see the Senate GOP do more to defeat Obamacare. He seems to think that the GOP doesn’t have a plan to defeat the bill. But, maybe they do have a plan: let the bill defeat itself. IMHO, the most likely outcome right now is that they won’t be able to get a compromise before Christmas and then it will be DOA. There’s talk of the White House blowing up Reid’s most recent compromise to get Lieberman on board. Nelson’s come out against any public option at all. I don’t mean to sound overconfident, but I think that it just might be dead.
There is a legitimate concern that the GOP will be portrayed as simply obstructionist. Why risk raising your negatives on a bill that isn’t going to pass anyway? On the other hand, it would be nice to see the GOP stand for SOMETHING, but I’m a pick your battles kind of guy.
If it turns out that I’m wrong and the bill does not defeat itself, I don’t think that we will win by playing the delay game. We should make this 100% about abortion. We’ve already seen the tenuous relationship between pro-life and pro-abortion* Dems. We should exploit the crap out of that. If we make this about abortion, we can win.
*Note – I have officially stopped using the term “pro-choice” after reading Jonah Golberg’s exceptionally persuasive column and encourage you to do the same. (For those who don’t care to click over, he says pro-choice people, if they were really pro-choice, would vigorously oppose a one-child policy as infringing on a woman’s reproductive freedom. They don’t. They only want people to “choose” abortions, not choose life.)
