Governor Rick Scott ordered all state and U.S. flags in Florida to be flown at half-staff in memory of murdered freelance journalist and Miami native Steven Sotloff, late Thursday, according to EyesOnNews.
Taken directly from the governor’s statement:
Steven Sotloff, a former University of Central Florida journalism student from Pinecrest, was brutally murdered by ISIS in a barbaric video displayed worldwide. Ann and I join all Floridians, and Americans, in grieving with the Sotloff family today. Those who murdered Steven are evil, and evil must be confronted and destroyed.
In honor and in memory of Steven Sotloff, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida on Friday, September 5, 2014
After a video of Sotloff’s alleged brutal murder surfaced online earlier in the week, Scott spoke out about the Florida native.
“On behalf of Ann and myself, and on behalf of all the people of Florida, we want to convey our sorrow and our condolences to the entire Sotloff family. We cannot begin to understand their grief,” said Scott.
“The people who did this are evil. They are not merely wrong, they are not adversaries, they are evil. And evil must be confronted and destroyed. In fact, these immoral animals reject the basic code of human morality that crosses all cultures. This is not a political or international disagreement. It is a case of barbarians choosing to set themselves apart from the rest of humanity.
“Here is what they need to understand – Steve Sotloff was a Floridian, but more importantly he was an American. If you attack one American, you are attacking all Americans. Last week President Obama said that his administration does not at present have a strategy for dealing with ISIS – these immoral evil people.
“I think I can speak for all Floridians and all Americans when I say that the time for a strategy is now, and part of that strategy needs to include destroying them.”
Held in captivity by ISIS forces since August, 2013, Steven Sotloff, 31, had his life previously threatened at the end of the James Foley execution video two weeks ago. From Miami, he attended the University of Central Florida.
A memorial service for Sotloff will be held, Friday, September 5, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Temple Beth Am, 5950 South West 88th Street, Miami, Florida 33156. The service is open to the public.
