Opinion: Campaigning in California; Voting for Trump, Even in Deep Blue States

California Gov. Gavin Newsom listens to a question during an interview in Sacramento, Calif., Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019. Newsom said President Donald Trump should be removed from office by Congress, but with Republicans in control of the U.S. Senate the best way to boot Trump from office is at the ballot box. My good friend and colleague Kira Davis (@RealKiraDavis)had an outstanding article out the other day. In it, she opines that President Trump could indeed, flip California from Deep Blue to Crimson (Roll Tide!) Red this November. She writes:

It seems hopeless, but something has happened recently that makes me think we may be on the precipice of an historic shift in the Golden State. If Trump can take advantage, he could very possibly flip this state in the popular vote, and have a huge affect down ballot.

If you’ve followed me for the last couple of months you’ve seen me raging about AB5, the California law that dropped and put nearly a million independent contractors out of work or under the threat of losing work. The consequences were swift and brutal. In the span of a few months the electoral mood here has gone from business as usual to “Vote the bums out”.

Back in July and August, my mind meandered along a similar path, but for different reasons. At that time, I was pretty sure that there was no way that President Trump could carry California. Nevertheless, I did propose that he campaign there…and in Baltimore too. I proposed this as mainly a distraction for the Democrats, to get them off their game. I also thought it was a good way to show them that the gloves were off and that just being a member of a minority, doesn’t immunize you from counterattacks.

After reading Kira’s piece, my mind became somewhat open to the possibility that President Trump could sway 50 percent, plus one and win California. And wouldn’t that be a sight to behold?!

However, there is a far more important and much more far-reaching reason we need to fight for every vote, even in Deep Blue and Dark Crimson (Roll Tide!) states. It’s that abomination being put forth by the left—The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The NPVIC is an agreement whereby all the signatory states pledge to cast their electoral votes for the winner of the National Popular Vote.

This compact would go into effect, once the Electoral Vote tally of the signatory states reached or exceeded 270. As of today, the initiative has been adopted by fifteen states and the District of Columbia, for a total of 196 electoral votes. Begun as an initiative introduced by a number of states in 2007, this effort received a boost after the 2016 presidential election, when Donald Trump flogged the fat fundament of Hillary Clinton by an electoral College score of 304-227. However, the estimate of the nationwide popular vote, had her allegedly beating Trump by 3 million votes.

This is why each and every Red Vote is important. Even if you live in a Blue State or a Red State, your vote counts, if nothing more than to help put paid to this bogus initiative. It seems pretty clear that this compact is illegal under the Constitution, as it has not been approved by the federal government, which is required. That could change the next time the Democrats weasel their way into power. Every vote counts. See you in November!
