Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Invites Bowser and Adams to the Border - Will They Visit?

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) invited Mayors Muriel Bowser (D-Washington D.C.) and Eric Adams (D-New York) to visit the southern border after they voiced concerns about migrants being bussed into their cities.

“Your recent interest in this historic and preventable crisis is a welcome development—especially as the President and his Administration have shown no remorse for their actions nor desire to address the situation themselves,” the governor wrote in a letter.

He continued:

“As Governor, I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action. I also ask you to join me in requesting President Biden secure the border and put an end to this disastrous crisis.”

Texas and Arizona decided to start bussing in migrants to the two East Coast cities to serve multiple purposes. One purpose is practical, as many communities along the border are not properly equipped to handle a humanitarian crisis at their doorstep. By comparison, New York and Washington D.C. would arguably be better prepared.

The second purpose is political, as progressive leaders and residents who are in denial about the crisis would be seeing it with their own eyes.

As RedState’s Nick Arama reported in July, Bowser has gotten so frustrated with people arriving that she called for the National Guard to step in to assist. Similarly, Adams griped that there would be consequences and asked for the local community to be aware.

“We can’t have the historical, ‘I believe people should be housed, but just don’t house them on my block.’ Everyone’s block is going to be impacted by this,” Adams said.

Bowser and Adams should take up the offer from Abbott in a moment of bipartisanship, but one should be doubtful they will. It would act as a direct rebuke of the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis in a significant way, so it would take courage for the mayors to take a stand.

The Biden administration has largely been stubborn on securing the border, but the Department of Homeland Security quietly announced last week that they would finish parts of the wall in Yuma, Arizona.
