I’m told I’m supposed to be really upset when Trump tweets something outlandish, but I’ve long reached the point where I just laugh and worry about things that actually matter.

Apparently, not everyone agrees with my live and let live approach, as the President received his first ratio on the platform that he’s made so central to his presidency. If you don’t know what a ratio is, it’s when comments outstrip retweets and likes, signifying a bad take.

That’s impressive, even for Trump, though I’m as surprised as everyone that it hasn’t happened before.

I mean, I get the criticism I guess. There’s no evidence this 75 year old man was part of Antifa. In fact, there’s video of the guy arguing with protestors prior to the incident where he’s being accused of being a right winger showing up to cause trouble. I also saw the source for the “he was scanning police communications to black out equipment” claim and it makes no sense whatsoever. What the guy is holding is his phone, which you can see is on the camera at one point. He was pushed down and bleeding out of his ears, a sign of a traumatic brain. Smearing him as some sort of top secret Antifa agent is a bit much.

The “reporter” behind the OANN report Trump parroted is Kristian Rouz, famous for spreading multiple false stories over the years. He’s also a writer for the Russian owned Sputnik “news” site. I’m all about conservative media growing and having their voice, but OANN needs to be better than this.

Looking at all angles though, the man was obviously trying to agitate matters to get a reaction out of the police, so at least some part of Trump’s tweet is true. He walked into the group of cops and tried to physically hold them back, touching the officers several times. While I feel for the guy getting hurt, I can also understand how an officer might give a shove there to create some distance, having no idea what the guy’s intentions are. It’s easy for people to judge behind their computers. It’s a much more difficult situation in the heat of the moment when you’ve got a guy in your face.

Honestly though, I think some of the criticism on the right is more about Trump not focusing on issues that can help his re-election vs. some deep moral outrage. I can understand that as well.

So be outraged or don’t. We’ll have moved onto something else by tomorrow. I’m sure Republicans who are also up for re-election in 2020 would rather not have to deal with this stuff, but it is what it is. Trump is not changing. He is not acting or executing some grand strategy when he tweets this stuff. He’s your conspiracy loving uncle and you can either love him or hate him. I’m gonna remain consistent and say that it’ll take more than bad tweets for me to decide to flush my policy priorities down the drain.
