Cough it Up, California: The State's AG Has Charged You $21 Million for His Lawsuits Against President Trump. So Far

In the land of Trump haters, California is a titan.

And as such, it’s not afraid to try to sue the pants off the President at every possible turn.

Hence, here’s some high-dollar news for residents of the Golden State: Over the past three years, Cali’s charged taxpayers $21 million for its legal disputes with The Donald.

This, according to Sacramento’s FOX40.

Voters can thank state Attorney General Xavier Becerra for the bill, as he’s filed more than sixty suits against the administration.

A few of the issues: the 2020 census, the border wall, transgenderism in the military, immigration enforcement at the border, and sanctuary cities.

Democratic political consultant Ed Emerson praised Xavier:

“He’s protecting our values. Separating children from their families, detaining them for unlimited amounts of time and keeping them in cages. This is not who we are, and California has to step in. We have to lean into this and fight this fight for the whole country.”

Were suits filed against the Obama administration for building the cages?

As I’ve pointed out before, despite a million televised assertions to the contrary, family separation was not a “Trump policy,” per se. It’s the result of a long line of events, begun with the Clinton era’s Flores Agreement, routed through a Democratic Congress, and mandated by the left-wing 9th Circuit Court of Appeals (see here).

But politics, it seems, often isn’t about the facts. It’s about opening mouths in order to say words that mean nothing other than, “Elect us, not them.”

Back to the 21 mil, Republican strategist Tim Rosales told KTXL he doesn’t see it as all that much cash.

He just thinks the attention-seeking is crappy:

“You know, at the end of the day, I don’t know that it’s costing a ton of money.”

At the end of what day, and how do I get to that day?

“I think the bigger issue is, is this is politics. It’s politics by Becerra. He wants to make a national name for himself. He wants to get himself on the evening news, and this is how you do it if you’re the attorney general of California.”

The move’s certainly not unique to Democrats.

Here’s a quote from Texas Attorney General Gregg Abbott in 2013:

“I go into the office, I sue the federal government and then I go home.”

As I covered last week, in addition to being an obvious fan of double consonants, Gregg’s a fan of man-on-a-Houston-prison-mission Kanye West.

Six years ago, he was also a fan of lawsuits against Obama’s White House — he filed more than 30.

But as for California’s litigating liberalism, Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association President Jon Coupal believes it’s a waste of funds:

“I do believe that in many of these lawsuits, our attorney general is wasting the taxpayer dollars. If the state of California has a legitimate complaint against the federal government, they should exert their rights as a sovereign state. But that’s not what we’re seeing here right now.”

It’s just frivolous nonsense:

“Look, these dollars that are being expended by the Justice Department could be spent on all other things like actually catching criminals. And it’s my guess that, as these cases wind their way up through the courts, is that California will be on the losing end of the vast majority of them.”

AG Becerra provided a statement to FOX40 in defense of his megamillions.

Here’s part of it:

“The fact is, I don’t wake up in the morning planning to pick a fight with the administration. We file lawsuits to stop the Trump administration from breaking the law and taking actions which would hurt Californians.”

Hurt them, like charging them $21 million?

Here’s a list of the suits as of October 25th:
