Insanity: This Is How Columbia Administrators Are 'Policing' the Pro-Hamas Student Encampment

As RedState previously reported, the occupation of the Columbia University campus is ongoing despite the rampant antisemitism on full display, which has included chants of support for Hamas terrorists and threatening/intimidating Jewish students who try to attend classes.

Not surprisingly, administrators at Columbia are putting on an epic display of failure in leadership on so many levels, including barring an outspoken Jewish professor from not only entering the campus but from holding a pro-Israel rally in part to show support for Jewish students who feel unsafe.

As we also reported, the NYPD was called in a week ago to shut things down, but predictably, the camp was set up once again, which has now led to "negotiations" between the occupiers and Columbia administrators, with the latter looking for a way out of the mess of their own making.

Not surprisingly, the way they are handling it confirms who is in charge of things, and yes - it's pathetic (bolded emphasis added):

The university president, Nemak Shafik, was preparing to confer with the university senate, which could censure her as soon as Friday. And protesters and university officials were negotiating over the possible dismantling of an encampment that is dominating a swath of the campus lawn.

Overnight, the university and protesters narrowly avoided another confrontation that could have involved the police.

Dr. Shafik had warned Tuesday evening of a midnight deadline for the demonstrators to disperse, but around 3 a.m. Wednesday, the university said in a statement that student protesters had agreed to remove a significant number of the tents erected on the lawn, ensure non-students would leave, and bar discriminatory or harassing language among the protesters.

“In light of this constructive dialogue, the university will continue conversations for the next 48 hours,” the university said...

Here's what else Shafik said in that early morning email:

  • Student protestors have committed to dismantling and removing a significant number of tents.
  • Student protesters will ensure that those not affiliated with Columbia will leave. Only Columbia University students will be participating in the protest.
  • Student protestors in the encampment will comply with all requirements of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) with respect to activities and safety.
  • Student protestors have taken steps to make the encampment welcome to all and have prohibited discriminatory or harassing language.

So apparently we're supposed to be assured that a group of hate-filled left-wing agitators, some of whom as noted above have expressed support for Hamas terrorists, are going to act in good faith and comply with requests from administrators to take down some of the tents, engage in civility, to "comply" with the FDNY, and to not disparage/harass Jewish students?

This is a true "lunatics are running the asylum" moment if there ever was one, a moment that will go down in infamy for Columbia University down the road once all the smoke and dust clears.

With prominent affluent Columbia graduates like New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft yanking their generous support from Columbia, it's hard to see how they survive this, but time will tell.

As always, stay tuned.
